Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

Under the general direction of the Central Sterile Manager, the Team Leader assumes the responsibility for overall performance and customer service of the Central Sterile Processing Department on a given shift. The Team leader provides a variety of indirect patient related services such as assisting, monitoring, inspecting and supporting the Central Sterile team in preparing and assembling surgical supplies and instrumentation, and maintaining the sterile processing area. The Team Leader serves as a resource and role model for the staff. In addition, he/she mentors, trains and schedules the work of employees in the department. The Sterile Processing Team Leader serves as a the point person with Central Sterile & the Operating Room staff to resolve issues that may arise before, during, or after a case. The Team Leader coordinates with the Operating Room to ensure appropriate instrumentation and sterile supplies are available for each case. The Team Leader will promote a culture of safety, follow established policies and adhere to all state and federal regulatory requirements, including Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), Association for the Advancement of Medical Information (AAMI), Occupational Safety and health Administration (OSHA) and The Joint Commission standards.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Guides and directs the activities of staff to meet the needs of the Operating Room, medical and nursing units throughout the Hospital according to policy and procedures.
  • Sets priorities and assigns work as they relate to instrumentation processing and case cart preparation.
  • Prepares work schedules, assists manager with performance issues, and gives input to manager on performance evaluations.
  • Trains and acts as a mentor and resource to all Central Sterile technicians.
  • Coordinates with the perioperative Manager and Nurse Educator in planning in-services and educational opportunities for staff.
  • Troubleshoots problems and strategically resolve issues with Central Sterile Department.
  • Ensures accurate and appropriate handling of instruments/equipment, including selection of cleaning agents, lubricants, examination for function and assembly according to count sheets, and preparation for sterilization.
  • Loads, monitors, operates and maintains different types of cleaning and sterilization equipment and machinery accurately and safely.
  • Coordinates routine and emergency equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitors supplies and materials inventory; orders department supplies and replacement instruments.
  • Communicates delays, supply, instrumentation and equipment problems, substitutions involving Operating Room and other areas.
  • Maintains collaborative customer service relationships.
  • Expert knowledge of Central Sterile Processing department rules, procedures and processes.
  • Works with Central Sterile Manager for appropriate data collection and monitors continuous quality indicators; collaborates on quality projects and promotes continuous quality improvement through participating and leading change initiatives.
  • Completes quality control and infection control standard checks. Performs weekly/monthly tracers with Infection Prevention.
  • Participates in process and quality improvement initiatives, supports managerial decisions and interprets changes in procedures to staff.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professional demeanor during tense or stressful situations.
  • Leads daily huddles in conjunction with Manager.

 

Qualifications

High school graduate or GED

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution within one year of hire

Two years of experience in reprocessing and sterile processing preferred
