Job Summary / Purpose

Assumes responsibility and accountability for the direct and indirect care of the surgical patient during the pre-operative (Pre-op) and post-operative (PACU I) phase. Provides professional nursing care to patients, incorporating the nursing process, the environment of care and the technical equipment in conjunction with health care team members.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs Pre-Admission/Assessment Telephone Call (PAT) on scheduled surgery/procedure using EMR (electronic medical record). The PAT form will be determined by the surgery/procedure scheduled: PAT Endoscopy, PAT Short Form, Pediatric PAT or PAT Long Form.
  1. Administers nursing care to patients the day of scheduled surgery/procedure: includes nursing assessment, medication reconciliation, planning, implementing and evaluating the patient’s care plan. Under the guidance of physician orders, unit protocols/policies and nursing judgment.
  2. Maintains patient confidentiality and delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights
  3. Always considers factors relating to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning/delivering patient care
  4. Skilled starting IV for surgery/procedures patients
  5. Utilizes hospital information system to process orders and retrieve patient information/test results.
  6. Maintains knowledge about documentation requirements and continued update of information needed for accurate documentation using EMR.
  7. Accesses policies, professional publications and electronic resources to provide patient/family or caregiver education, counseling in recognition and solutions of physical, emotional, and environmental health problems in the scope of nursing practice.
  8. Communicates effectively and appropriately with patients, physicians, families, staff and other health care tam members, demonstrating maturity and accountability for job performance.
  9. Participates in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge, professional development of peers and colleagues
  10. Assists with clerical duties (i.e. scheduling, maintaining chart supplies and answering telephone, using office equipment
  11. Take assigned call as scheduled with an expected response time of 45 minutes of less.
