  • Performs immunological work-ups within the required time of current organ preservation methods.
  • Independently verifies results and reports conclusions directly to physicians.
  • Performs crossmatches between recipients and donors (live or deceased) identified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the Iowa Donor Network. Responsible for extent of crossmatching and selection of appropriate sera.
  • Screens potential recipients for anti-HLA antibody determination.
  • Records and reviews test results for accuracy. Completes required administrative tasks and gives reports to medical director for review.
  • Performs flow cytometry analysis for lymphoma/leukemia immunotyping and lymphyocyte subsets/CD4s among other tests.
  • Participates in competency assessments and proficiency testing.
  • Performs complex laboratory procedures utilized for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to include neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
  • Rotates into call schedules as determined by department.
  • Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision.
  • Assists and supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives. Utilizes LEAN principles/productivity standards.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records.
  • Performs new instrument or procedure implementation and training.
  • Maintains supply inventories.
  • Trains new employees and acts as a preceptor for medical laboratory science students.
  • Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.


  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry, Biology or related field with one-year clinical internship in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science accredited Clinical Laboratory Science program or approved alternate career path as designated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988.
  • Registration by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or by the American Medical Technologists as a Medical Technologist or categorical registration by either the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel or ASCP in one of the laboratory sciences is required. Minimum of 1 year full time experience in an American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) or College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited histocompatibility laboratory.

    Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) from the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI).
