Overview

MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit, Catholic medical centers in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Newton and Centerville and two specialty hospitals – MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in Clive (965 beds total)  –  along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care, pediatric, internal medicine and specialty clinics. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1893, MercyOne Central Iowa has the longest continually operating hospital in Des Moines and is also one of the largest employers in the state, with more than 7,000 employees and a medical staff of more than 1,000 physicians and allied health associates. Responsibilities

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Hot and cold food production for retail services. Maintains sanitary and organized environment. Practices and abides by food codes and applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies’ requirements to provide safe food to our customers. Serves customers in a professional manner with great customer service. Provides nourishments and prepares trays for patients.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Hot and cold food production for retail sales.
  • Sliced fruit, vegetables, desserts, meats for retail production and sales.
  • Sets up for café sales – stock food and paper products.
  • Places silverware all in one direction for customers.
  • Knowledgeable and practices food safety codes and governing standards; federal, state, local and accreditation agencies.
  • Checks food temperatures frequently throughout shift. Documents temperatures on applicable forms. Notifies Supervisor immediately of any food out of compliance.
  • Monitors temperature of freezers, refrigeration, dishwasher, and heating units throughout shift. Documents temperatures on applicable forms. Notifies Supervisor immediately of any food out of compliance.
  • Maintain refrigeration units in clean, orderly condition, compliant with food codes and regulatory agencies.
  • Requisitions, transports, and replenishes foods and supplies to replenish the inventory in the café.
  • Inspects items for integrity. Rotates stock, disposes of outdated products or less than optimum quality or correct temperature.
  • Portions and packages cold food items; stocks and cleans refrigerated display cases inside and out.
  • Makes coffee, juice, and smoothies; replenishes and cleans beverage-dispensing machines and areas.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work area, the café serving area, and equipment.
  • Pushes food carts, racks, and dish bins.
  • May cook at the grill, fryer, or sandwich grill.
  • Deep cleans refrigerators, countertops and cupboards, tile, and entire café serving and seating areas, including microwaves, tables, chairs, and tray return. Cleans and sanitizes utensils and equipment.
  • Maintains signage daily.
  • Follows proper cleaning techniques. Stores chemicals properly, follows MSDS rules; labels product appropriately, uses chemicals according to directions, uses PPE as necessary.
  • Practices safety procedures. Utilizes tools, equipment, and protective equipment such as wet floor signs, proper ergonomics, informing Supervisor of safety hazards and equipment failures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of effective customer service skills and performance improvement.
  • Maintains refrigerator and freezer temperatures internally and externally.
  • Prepares and cooks using standardized recipes and ingredients issued, as determined by menu.
  • Inventories, receives, rotates and stocks food and supplies for kitchen and patient areas.
  • Takes orders for meal service and serves visitors and staff in courteous, efficient manner.
  • Washes dishes, silverware and utensils.
  • Works as cashier during meal service, records and deposits receipts, balances register each day.
  • Takes out garbage.
  • Prepares food, sets up, serves, cleans up at Special Functions as necessary.
  • Delivers nourishments, snack as meals to patient areas as necessary.
  • Distributes, gathers and processes patient menus.
  • Heats patient meals, monitors for correct temperatures and maintain logs. Reports any variances to Supervisor.
  • Inventories, delivers, stocks, rotate, date and check for expired products in department and in-patient care areas.
  • Cleans pop machine equipment in department and galleys; lines and trays.
  • Monitors refrigerator and freezer temperatures internally and externally.
  • Checks Efficiently requisitions, inspects, prepares, cooks, cools and portions large and small quantities of meats, vegetables, cereals, soups, fruits and other forms of food in accordance with quality standards, quantity demands and standardized recipes.
  • Forecasts production and utilizes leftovers to maintain efficient waste control program.
  • Labels and dates items as required. Packages, wraps and labels items for freezing or chilled holding.
  • Maintains organized, clean production area, equipment, utensils and tools.
  • Cleans work area, including but not limited to, ovens, stove, grill, and tables.
  • Lifts trays and pans of food from ovens, steamers, and other equipment.
  • Assists in other areas as required.
  • and records temperature of food as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • High school level of knowledge of several subjects in order to prepare reports and performs calculations and/or works with courtesy with other people.
  • Computer training, including the use of a computer mouse, telephone etiquette is desirable.
