Lab Assistant

As a Lab Assistant with St. Joseph Medical Center, you will collect blood samples for laboratory testing.  You will join a team of five (5) other lab assistant professionals to support the needs of our patients.  Our teams utilize individual electronic hand held devices which provide collection information and are used to scan each patient for positive patient identification. You will also have the support of a processing team for your blood draws and use of a pneumatic tube system to transport your collected samples to the laboratory.  We will partner you with a laboratory trainer for your first 30 days to help acclimate to your new role.

Expectations:

• Create a positive patient experience for pediatric and adult patients needing venipuncture, capillary procedures, and special collections
• Process and prepare samples for testing to include validating patient identity, centrifugation, aliquoting, and preserving sample integrity
• Conduct Breath Alcohol Testing and urine collection for drug screens
• Follow Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines where applicable
• Record all order alterations accurately and timely
• Utilize our hospital and lab information systems for specimen labels and orders
• Test ready samples are delivered for testing or packaged for dispatch following specific guidelines.
• Record final disposition into the sample inventory system/storage program

Education/Work Experience Requirements
Completion of a phlebotomy course at a vocational college or equivalent technical school, including completion of a 4-week internship in Phlebotomy in a clinical lab setting; OR equivalent on-the-job training with recent lab experience that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/skills/abilities required.
Two years of recent related work experience in a clinical laboratory setting, phlebotomy clinic or other Patient Service Center and one year of insurance collection/data entry work experience that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge and skills/abilities preferred.

Licensure/Certification
Current Washington State certification as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist, OR
Current Washington State certification as a Medical Assistant.
National registration with ASCP in Phlebotomy preferred.
