This job is responsible for supervision and oversight of the operations of the Environmental Services function for an assigned shift(s) at an FHS hospital site in accordance with the standards of the organization and applicable regulatory requirements. An incumbent supervises the work of subordinate staff who are engaged in providing basic and specialty cleaning services to all areas of the assigned facility. Work includes interviewing and selecting qualified applicants, conducting training, performing quality assessment observations, processing time-off requests and conducting annual performance evaluations.
Work requires technical knowledge of hospital housekeeping techniques as well as supervisory practices and requirements and their application to the function. Also requires knowledge of safety, security, infection control and waste management standards and practices sufficient to ensure a safe and sanitary environment for hospital patients, staff and visitors.
Operations-Supervises the daily operations of the assigned function/work unit to ensure that all activities are conducted in a timely and cost-effective manner and in accordance with professional standards, budget constraints, internal policies/standards/procedures, collective bargaining agreements and/or applicable regulatory requirements; implements and enforces quality control/quality assurance and productivity standards; ensures that applicable standards, systems and procedures are understood and followed; monitors and audits related documentation to ensure conformance with established standards relating to timeliness, and accuracy; prepares periodic productivity reports and program updates for review of higher-level authority.
Participates in the development of, and implements, new/revised guidelines, procedures, processes and/or training materials in support of assigned function/work unit to facilitate regulatory compliance; demonstrates new products and equipment; ensures that employees understand and apply internal guidelines appropriately.
Staff Supervision and Development
Schedules, supervises and evaluates the work of assigned staff engaged in cleaning all hospital areas and public space in accordance with established procedures; assists in identifying adequate staffing levels for appropriate coverage to meet budgetary and operational objectives; ensures that staff are qualified and properly trained to perform assigned job duties; interviews job candidates and makes employment and other personnel decisions in accordance with established guidelines; orients employees and holds regular staff meetings to keep employees appraised of all matters relevant to successful job performance; approves timecards; communicates performance standards and evaluates employee performance; counsels employees, providing constructive feed back and recognizing results achieved; participates in performance management activities and resolves technical issues referred by subordinates as beyond their scope of authority.
Interprets, and monitors compliance with, applicable internal/external legal and regulatory agreements, standards and requirements; keeps abreast of changing regulatory requirements/regulations, and organizational initiatives/changes with potential to impact current operations; monitors impact on existing activities and identifies/implements effective response/solution while maintaining acceptable service levels and work quality.
Monitors and assesses current operations/services to identify opportunities and provide recommendations to Manager for performance/process improvements initiatives; implements approved changes and ensures that staff receive the necessary on-the-job training to enhance their understanding of performance improvement initiatives.
Other Essential Duties
Orders and dispenses supplies for department needs; maintain sterilizer and ampule testing logs; monitors all equipment to ensure security, cleanliness, and overall safety of operations; identifies, reports, and takes corrective action to resolve maintenance problems, reports, and investigates/acts upon breaches in building security, and potential safety hazards.
