The Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible for being a part of the resuscitation team, care of the neonate in distress, administration of bronchodilators, oxygen administration, diagnostic pulmonary function studies, arterial blood gas analysis, and patient education.


  • Administers treatments and medications which promote pulmonary hygiene, improve pulmonary function, and improve respiratory status
  • Evaluates and ensures proper maintenance of airways and patient ventilation
  • Implements oxygen, gas, and humidity therapy. Maintains oxygen and humidity devices and emergency equipment
  • Performs oximetry, safely obtains blood samples, and performs blood gas analysis; verifies accuracy of results
  • Performs preoperative assessments of patients’ respiratory status; provides instruction on prevention of postoperative complications
  • Sets up, monitors, and maintains invasive and noninvasive ventilatory and oxygenation devices; recognizes and corrects malfunctions or inappropriate settings
  • Participates in resuscitation efforts and other emergency medical treatments (based upon level of training)
  • Demonstrates competent and safe procedures in obtaining and handling sputum specimens.
  • Stocks supplies, assembles crash boxes, prepares ventilators and other equipment for immediate use; maintains a neat and orderly work area



  • Graudate of an American Medical Association/Committee for Accreditation Respiratory Therapy program required
  • Associate's Degree required
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist required 
  • Training in multiple age populations required
  • 2 years of clinical experience preferred
