Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY  

Provides spiritual care to patients, families, and staff within assigned settings, in conjunction with CPE students and spiritual care volunteers. Incumbents are typically assigned to specific service lines or functions, but may be temporarily assigned or reassigned at management’s discretion. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Delivers direct spiritual care appropriate to recipient’s spirituality, culture, religious preference and health status.
  • Works closely and effectively with care managers, interdisciplinary care teams, social workers, nursing and medical staff to provide spiritual care insights
  • Prepares timely, accurate, and thorough documentation in accordance with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) standards and procedures.
  • Provides direct spiritual consultation and spiritual and emotional support for staff experiencing work-related or personal stress, including being available for private conversations while respecting work schedules and locating private space for counseling.
  • Collaborates with CPE students, volunteers, and local clergy to extend spiritual care services.
  • Provides education and ethical consultation for patients, family, staff and volunteers.
  • Cultural/Diversity Sensitivity and Humility:  Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s), social context, values and perspectives of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services.  
  • Patient Population Served:  Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific populations served.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of four units of Clinical Pastoral education or be in their fourth unit upon hire.

Enrollment in a Master’s degree in theology or associated discipline that is recognized by a chaplaincy certifying body.

Licensure/Certification

Within five years of date of hire, an incumbent must have submitted application materials to become certified.

  2. Association of Professional Chaplains (APC),
  3. Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), OR 
  4. National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
  5. Spiritual Care Association (SCA)
