The Barrow Emergency Stroke Treatment Unit (BESTU) is a specially equipped and staffed mobile emergency room that brings expert stroke care directly to patients, revolutionizing the way many stroke victims in Phoenix receive treatment. The mobile stroke unit contains a portable lab and CT Scanner, clot-dissolving drugs, and a trained stroke team. The team connects with a Barrow vascular neurologist via telemedicine. Barrow launched the unit in partnership with the Phoenix Fire Department, whose 911 dispatchers deploy the unit whenever they receive a call about a possible stroke within the unit’s response radius. The collaboration is helping to speed the process in which strokes are diagnosed and treated, with the goal of reducing death and long erm disability among stroke victims.
