Responsibilities

This new Medical Surgical Observation unit at St. Michael Medical Center is a 24/7 unit. We are a specialized, fast-paced, observation unit of 13 adult observation bays dedicated to responding to the needs of the patient who requires ongoing diagnostic testing or observation prior to discharge or admission. Our staff provide compassionate, high quality care that is respectful, patient and family-centered, safe and cost-efficient. Be a part of this newly formed inaugural team and be an owner in a new service provided at St. Michael!

Our nurses are adept at working with fast paced changes and coordinating care since stays are typically less than 24-48 hours in this unit. Despite the rapid patient turnover, nurses in this unit demonstrate their caring by quickly establishing a rapport with the patient and involving them in their own care. The staff experience the professional satisfaction that comes with making a difference every day for their patients. The patient population includes those experiencing chest pain, stroke, congestive heart failure exacerbation, uncontrolled hypertension, dehydration, and post-procedural recovery for cardiac catheterization and short stay surgery.

JOB SUMMARY:

This job is responsible for providing a wide variety of professional nursing services which focus on the provision of quality patient care consistent with Franciscan Health System (FHS) standards/values, applicable regulatory requirements and scope of practice for the nursing profession. Work also includes developing, implementing and assessing the patient plan of care during time of stay in collaboration with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and the patient/family. An incumbent is engaged in direct patient care, including assessing, planning, coordinating, evaluating and delegating work to members of the patient care team, and for providing education and consultation with patients, families, physicians and other staff members in implementing appropriate nursing interventions for optimal patient care.
