In keeping with the Dignity Health core values, the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) supports and promotes the provision of quality patient care. SPD centralizes the decontamination, sterilization, assembly, distribution, and control of sterile and nonsterile items and equipment used in all areas of the hospital. Centralizing these activities enables the provision of more effective and efficient service. The overall objective of SPD is to have the right item in the right place at the right time, in the right condition. Our SPD technologists are required to do the following: read, write, and follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds; acquire and practice thorough knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique when performing their various duties; participate in ongoing training; and follow exact procedures for every assignment. They are also expected to perform arithmetic computations to determine the amount of supplies needed, issued, and returned. They must work independently without close supervision. Most importantly, they must be friendly, courteous, cooperative, team-oriented, and proactive, with problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
