Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

Contributes to the safe and efficient operation of the Heart Institute by assisting physicians, nurses, sonographers, and radiology technicians during procedures performed in the Heart Institute. Assists with patient preparation in HISSU prior to procedures. Independently performs designated functions for each modality as appropriate or as assigned. Primary responsibilities include maintenance of standard procedure room supplies, transport of patients, collection of patient data including vital signs, point of care testing, fingerstick blood glucose, removal of IV's, transport of non-narcotic medications, room set up and equipment cleaning. Performs EKG's from monitor and / or EKG cart. Designated technicians process EKG's in MUSE system. Designated technicians assist and / or schedule patients when appropriate. Documents designated patient data in Cerner or on department specific flow sheets. Performs receptionist and clerical functions for individual departments as assigned including charge entry, maintenance of department log books, retrieval of procedure reports, copying and providing CD records when requested and other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

  • Performs patient care tasks as assigned in the Heart Institute in accordance with applicable policy. Tasks may include but are not limited to EKG, pulse oximetry, vital signs, patient data collection, assisting with stress testing, operating treadmills, fingerstick glucose, TEE probe processing, and other duties as needed, setting up monitors, hooking up monitoring equipment, assisting with stress testing or other procedures as appropriate under supervision of Charge RN or equivalent or appropriate Department Manager.
  • Manages EKG data in central digital storage, places orders, and completes tasks in electronic medical record as appropriate. (HINS Non-Invasive only)
  • Submits EKG’s for interpretation and provides billing data to interpreting physician offices. (HINS Non Invasive only)
  • Maintains department logs, oxygen tank check lists, daily logs and performs various clerical tasks and other tasks as assigned.
  • Facilitates work flow by maintaining daily schedules, patient check in, log books, and department documentation, distributing requisitions to appropriate clinical staff, providing reports or records to other providers as needed.
  • Enters charges into hospital billing system if applicable.
  • Performs procedures to ensure quality patient care in accordance with established department protocols. Collaborates with sonographers, department nurses, radiology technicians and Managers as appropriate to facilitate patient care.
  • Transports patients in Heart Institute Procedure Lab (HIPL), Heart Institute Short Stay (HISSU), Cath lab, or EP lab as delegated charge RN or department equivalent or applicable manager.
  • Obtains supplies and non-narcotic medications as needed.
  • Maintains designated equipment and department supplies as appropriate.
  • Maintains department environment: empties linen containers, cleans equipment, maintains stock and supplies in designated locations as appropriate.
  • Displays knowledge and complies with the National Patient Safety goals.
  • Participates in hospital and department quality assurance programs to ensure safety and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintains professional development and education for technical competency.
  • Uses standard precautions, PPE, at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance and licensure for current position.
  • Attends all St. Joseph Health required educational programs and education modules.
  • Contributes to the efficient operation and monitoring of the department and utilizes our resources efficiently.
  • Demonstrates complete working knowledge of equipment within assigned area.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge and performance consistent with the Code of Conduct Standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by HIPL, EP, Cath lab, or Managers.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent education

Licensure and Certifications

  • Basic Life Support - CPR (BLS-CPR)
