Responsibilities

Consistent with scope of licensure, parameters of the California Nurse Practice Act, and Mercy Medical Center Merced (MMCM) policy and procedure, renders direct and indirect nursing care to assigned patient populations. Coordinates care of Perioperative patient within surgical services, with physicians and their offices and involved hospital departments. Establishes and implements an individualized, problem oriented plan of nursing care, and evaluates the effectiveness of care provided. Provides immediate direction to other members of the perioperative care team to assure the appropriate provision of nursing services. Patient age populations served, and the specific competencies that comprise this job title may vary among nursing units. These specifics are found in the “Department / Unit Orientation & Initial Assessment of Competency” checklists for this unit/position, and –by reference – form a part of this job description.

  • Possesses the skills to identify opportunities to reduce procedural risks during the pre-procedure planning for care. Observes, collects and records data related to patient's biophysical, psychosocial, environmental and self-care ability as well as educational and discharge planning needs. Assessments are done upon admission to the endoscopy or infusion unit and ongoing during the procedure or therapy.
  • Develops a relevant plan of care with the patient and family to meet their needs using assessment database and nursing diagnosis/problems. Monitors plan of care based on nursing diagnosis and patient expected outcomes that include nursing intervention upon admission to the units.
  • Implements the plan of care with the physician, patient, and patient's family. Operates specialized endoscopic equipment. Applies knowledge of crash cart and location of supplies, emergency medications and equipment to provide safe and competent nursing care. Anticipates physician needs in preparing for and during the procedure. Prepares for procedures as indicated by Endoscopy and Infusion schedule, patient consent and physician's preference. Follows physician orders according to the prescribed medical regime by preparing, assisting and providing follow up care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures or therapies..

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must possess and maintain a current Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate
  • Must possess and maintain a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate (ACLS)
  • Must possess and maintain a current Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certificate (PALS) within three (3) months of hire.

Please be advised that this location requires quarterly American Heart Association (AHA) Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) competency certification post-hire.  This ongoing competency is required through resources internal to the facility; outside RQI competency resources are not acceptable for CommonSpirit Health compliance requirements.

 

Preferred:

  • Clinical experience in PACU, Operating Room, ICU, Emergency Department, Endoscopy.
  • Conscious Sedation experience preferred.
  • Possess and maintain a current nursing certification such as Certified Nurse-Operating Room (CNOR) , Certified Peri-anesthesia Nurse (CPAN), Certified Ambulatory Peri-anesthesia Nurse CAPA), Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN), Certification from the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Association (SGNA)
