CHI St. Alexius Health is a regional health network with a tertiary hospital in Bismarck, the system also consists of critical access hospitals (CAHs) in Carrington, Dickinson, Devils Lake, Garrison, Turtle Lake, Washburn and Williston and numerous clinics and outpatient services.  CHI St. Alexius Health manages four CAHs in North Dakota - Elgin, Linton, and Wishek, as well as Mobridge Regional Medical Center in Mobridge, S.D. CHI St. Alexius Health offers a comprehensive line of inpatient and outpatient medical services, including: a Level II Trauma Center, primary and specialty physician clinics, home health and hospice services, durable medical equipment services, a fitness and human performance center and ancillary services throughout western and central North Dakota.

Responsibilities

2026 Nursing Internship Program

May 2026-August 2026(flexible): 240 hours

 

Application Period: 9/1/25-10/31/25

Interviews: 11/7, 11/13, & 11/14/25 from 1300-1500

Offers to Interns: 11/24/2025

Final Decisions from students due: 12/5/25

The Nurse Intern will be responsible for indirect and direct patient care, applying the nursing process within his/her acquired academic skill level under the delegation and supervision of an RN mentor. The Nurse Intern will support and comply with policies and procedures while maintaining standards of the state Nurse Practice Act. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adheres to St. Alexius Medical Center mission, values, and Journey Beyond Excellence expectations to foster a compassionate, healing environment providing physiological, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and visitors. 

  • Assures quality of care by adhering to St. Alexius Medical Center policies, philosophies and standards of care regulated by ND State Board of Nursing, the ND nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations

  • Gathers appropriate information to assist RN in the preparation and maintenance of an effective patient care plan and documents accordingly. 

  • Assists the RN in meeting the educational needs of patient/family/co-workers utilizing principles and current professional literature to achieve positive learning outcomes. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. 

  • Notifies the RN of significant findings or changes in the patient’s physician or mental condition. 

  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, mediation administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records following HIPAA regulations and St. Alexius Medical Center policy. 

  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in multidisciplinary problem-solving. 

  • Successfully completes the defined job specific competencies, including competencies for age specific, as appropriate.

 

Qualifications

Education: Completion of the third year of an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Program.   

 

Experience: No previous experience required. 

 

Skills: Working knowledge of Baccalaureate junior level clinical nursing skills. 

 

Interpersonal Skills: Good communication skills are necessary because of the constant communication, both oral and written, with patients, families, visitors, and medical center staff. Accountable for own conduct and promotes and supports positive working relationships among staff, between other disciplines, departments, families, visitors, and patients. Maintains confidentiality.  

 

Physical Effort: Safe levels of physical effort will not exceed: 

  Lifting: (between knuckle and shoulder height) up to 30 lbs.  

  Carrying: (between hip and shoulder height for a distance up to 28 feet), up to 40 lbs.

  Pulling: initial forces up to 50 lbs of force. 

  Pushing: initial forces up to 45 lbs of force or sustained forces 15-20 lbs.


Hours of Work: Rotating shift work or straight days, evenings, or nights. Rotating holidays and weekends.
