Responsibilities

Job Summary
Performs diagnostic sleep procedures for patients as ordered by a physician, and in accordance with established protocols, standards and practices. Work includes; 1) laboratory set-up, 2) patient preparation 3) performing, observing and evaluating daytime and overnight polysomnograms, 2) scoring sleep staging 3) assisting in the tabulation of data from scored records, and 4) monitoring and checking equipment for possible changes/adjustments as necessary during the study.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Sleep Lab Manager and requires thorough knowledge of the function and safe operation of equipment used to monitor and record breathing (airflow/effort), electroencephalograms (brain waves), electrocardiograms (heart rate and rhythm), electromyograms (muscle activity), and pulse oximetry (blood oxygenation / saturation).

Incumbents are also accountable for maintaining their skills and knowledge by participating in conferences, technical meetings, and other educational activities as required by their certification of registration and participating in departmental quality assurance programs within the scope of hospital-wide program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs, observes, and records daytime and overnight sleep/EEG procedures under supervision of Sleep Lab Manager.
  • Scores sleep study results and generates reports for interpretation by physician.
  • Completes all required documentation in accordance with department protocol.
  • Maintains laboratory with supplies and keeps equipment in clean operating condition.

Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements

  • Successful completion of an American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) accepted educational program leading to an Associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography.
    OR
  • Successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and /or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities required.

Licensure/Certification

  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).
  • Current healthcare provider BLS certification required.

Please be advised that this location requires quarterly American Heart Association (AHA) Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) competency certification post-hire. This ongoing competency is required through resources internal to the facility; outside RQI competency resources are not acceptable for CommonSpirit Health compliance requirements.
