Welcome to Saint Joseph East, a 217-bed, full-service, community hospital located in a convenient setting in Lexington, Kentucky. Saint Joseph East also includes the Women's Hospital at Saint Joseph East which is dedicated to supporting the well-being of women in Central and Eastern Kentucky and serves a 16-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

Provides nursing care according to the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementing and evaluating.  Implements appropriate nursing care interventions.  Administers medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and established nursing policies and procedures.  Care provided is based on defined standards of patient care and nursing evidence-based practice.   

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Assumes responsibility for acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for patient care in the oncology setting. 
  2. Provides direct nursing care for specified patients, including appropriate supportive care for patients receiving radiation therapy, chemotherapy, blood components, fluid and electrolyte replacements, and other oncology treatments.
  3. Performs nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs for new and ongoing patients determining the need for standard, urgent or emergent interventions.  Utilizes oncology nurse driven protocols to manage cancer related side effects.  Evaluates progress towards attainment of desired patient outcomes.  
  4. Implements and/or modifies plan of care using assessment data, standards of care and evidence based practice inclusive of nursing care coordination, appropriate patient and family education related to the disease and treatment.  

5.Facilitates interdisciplinary partnership in patient care. 

  1. Integrates ethical provisions in nursing practice and delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights. 
  2. Demonstrates effective on-going observations and reassessment of patient/family and their response to the interventions and changes in condition. 
  3. Documents assessments and interventions in accordance with hospital policy and standards of care.
  4. Utilizes resources appropriately and follows facility guidelines for documentation and charging of medical supplies and equipment. 
  5. Assigns or delegates tasks to designated support personnel based on needs and conditions of the patient, complexity of the task, predictability of the outcome and facility policy. 
  6. Collaborates with new employees and peers to support orientation, training and development opportunities.  Supports the profession of nursing through support for nursing student clinical activities, as appropriate.
  7. Maintains compliance with all hospital and department specific competencies and continuing education requirements. 
  8. Other duties assigned by the manager. 

Qualifications

Required Education For Staff Job Levels:

 

Associates Degree in Nursing


Required Licensure and Certifications:

 

Current and Active RN License to Practice in the State of Kentucky
Current and Active Basic Life Support Certification Through the American Heart Association


Preferred Qualifications:

 

ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Certificate  
Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

 

Upon Hire Obtain an Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Radiation Therapy Certificate within 6 months of hire IF 2 years of radiation oncology experience has been met. 
If 2 years of radiation oncology experience has not been met then the ONS Radiation Therapy Certificate will be obtained within 6 months after the RN has met 2 years of radiation oncology experience.                                                                                          
Radiation Oncology RNs NEW to oncology must complete the ONS Cancer Basics Course within 90 days of hire
36 oncology-related continuing nursing education contact hours every three years unless an oncology national certification is held. 
2 continuing education activities related to breast cancer annually.
