Responsibilities

As our Psychiatric Nurse at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, now part of CommonSpirit Health formed between Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Dignity Health, you’ll help our patients and their families feel comfortable and educated when they’re making significant healthcare decisions. Our patient population needs hands-on nursing to be able to identify patient needs when they are not able to articulate what they are experiencing.   You’ll build trust in these interactions by advocating, supporting, and educating your patients and their families. Your success in this role comes from your empathy and patience to help others during a vulnerable time in their lives. You’ll get to be involved in patient improvement that can take a patient from disorientation to opening up and sharing their personality.

 

  • You’ll routinely conduct rounds physical assessments of patients and med pass during your shift to diagnose the medical and emotional status of patients. 
  • You’re interacting with the patients throughout your shift so you’ll be the eyes and ears to notice any difference in patient health and behavior. You’ll be responsible for alerting the physician of any changes you notice.
  • We encourage a communal patient population so you can expect to interact with patients in a group setting and lead therapeutic group meetings with them as scheduled. You’ll also coordinate and work with the activities director for our unit.
  • We provide an important education component for patients and their caregivers so you’ll be expected to thoroughly explain diagnosis and plans for ongoing treatment to patient
  • AdheresApplies clinical knowledge and expertise for coordinating patient care by regularly planning and evaluating the care of patients. to established Hospital/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, Quality Assessment and Improvement Program, legal, safety, environmental, infection control standards, Nurse Practices Act and Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • Applies clinical knowledge and expertise for coordinating patient care by regularly planning and evaluating the care of patients.
  • Establishes and maintains professional and collaborative relationships with other staff members, physicians, patients, patient family members, and the public as appropriate, while assuring confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Demonstrates effective nursing judgement and a working knowledge of the nursing process
  • Provides guidance to interdisciplinary team members by supervising nursing interventions and assisting with related tasks.
  • Provides leadership by establishing priorities and coordinating nursing care.
  • Documents and communicates all observed symptoms, reactions, treatments and changes in the patient condition to the appropriate member of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Provides for teaching based on identified need.
  • Coordinates plan of care with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team to achieve desired goals and outcomes.
  • Communicates the plan of care to the patient and care partner(s) for the active involvement of the patient in the evolution of the plan throughout hospitalization.
  • Conducts hourly rounds with the patient and care partner, focusing on pain management, skin integrity, elimination and other miscellaneous patient needs.
  • Conforms to legal requirements of nursing practice and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates a professional, cooperative manner when dealing with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Demonstrates understanding of organizational structure and utilizes appropriate channels of communication.
  • Administers medications to assigned patients as directed and assesses and documents patient responses; initiates appropriate interventions per Hospital/Unit policy.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the approaches to and methods of Continuous Performance Improvement
  • Supervises and assigns duties to unlicensed assistive personnel based on legal scope of practice, regulations, and hospital policy.
  • Acts as a resource for all aspects of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) for employees and medical staff
  • Accesses network and effectively utilizes electronic applications (e.g., e-mail, LMS, T.E.A.M, etc) on a daily basis.
  • Serves as a preceptor and role model to new personnel and nursing students.
  • Collaborates with the supervisory staff to identify own educational and professional growth needs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year current acute care registered nursing experience required.
  • Registered Nurse with current California license required 1 year acute care registered nursing experience in Psychiatry preferred
  • Current AHA BLS required
  • Current certification in psychiatric nursing or alcohol and drug abuse counseling and Management of Assaultive Behavior training preferred
  • LA City Fire Care required within 90 days of hire.
