Responsibilities

Provides support for the activities of the cancer registry. Working under direction of Cancer Registrars, the assistant Performs follow up activities (if performed by institution) case finding, researches missing or unusual information, runs reports, Prepares materials and Provides clerical support for tumor boards and other conferences. Case finding and research includes reviewing patient medical information, such as coding summaries, pathology reports, and other medical data. Duties may also include supporting the Cancer Registry with general administrative tasks.


ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supports the Cancer Registrars with case finding to assist with maintaining a complete cancer registry database. Identifies patients with malignant and benign reportable conditions, according to established guidelines, through case finding practices to include review of pathology and cytology reports, monthly disease indexes, radiation and medical oncology patient records, inpatient and other outpatient records, and other data sources as needed. Enters initial suspense cases into the database and records non‐reportable cases. Assists with maintaining case finding and suspense files.

2. Performs Follow up activities to ensure compliance with CoC requirements. Maintains records of living patients to obtain end results information on the quality and length of survival. Responsible for monthly reports identifying patients due for follow‐up status verification including lost to follow‐up. Researches appropriate resources including but not limited to SSDI, and EMR. Enters all follow‐up data into the registry, maintaining quality and validating cases. 

3. Performs information searches which may include researching missing treatment information at request of cancer registrar and/or analysis/reports for activities such as the CoC CP3R/RQRS reports.

4. Supports Tumor Board/Case Conference activities which may include gathering required resources to support conference, collecting information at conference, sending out invitations, scheduling rooms, etc. Supports navigators, physicians, registrars and other departments in ensuring efficient, productive conference.

5. Provides general administrative clerical support for cancer registry which may include supporting cancer committee, staging or other registry forms, mailing/faxing letters, assembling materials, etc. Assists CTRs with CoC and other accreditation activities as requested. Participates in committees and meetings as requested. Assists in special projects and Quality Control activities as requested.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years of experience in the medical field

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

  • Knowledge of oncology
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
