Responsibilities

The Echocardiology Technologist shall assume the responsibility of the day-to-day clinical operation and quality assurance of the Echocardiology Service. All the criteria-based duties and standards within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines within the department and the Medical Center. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of St. Bernardine Medical Center. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support St. Bernardine Medical Center's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality improvement/process improvement activities

 

  • Is a role model for the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction effort, i.e. demonstrates AIDE/HELLO principles when interacting with customers, subordinates and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates skill necessary to perform best quality diagnostic echocardiograms, including measurements, recordings, and other related procedures on newborn, pediatric, adolescent adult and geriatric patients.
  • Consistently utilizes best patient positioning for optimal imaging.
  • Visualizes and records all standard views in all non-limited studies.
  • Suprasternal visualization of the aortic arch and great vessels in studies performed on neonates, pediatrics, and young adults with congenitial adnormalities (corrected or non-corrected)
  • Subcostal visualization of cardiac structures and IVC are provided when technically possible.
  • M Model recordings of mitral valve, aortic valve and left atrium are provided in non-limited studies.
  • Provides comprehensive prelininary report, including measurements and technician's findings in a comprehensive and time efficient manner.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and well organized test environment that provides for patient comfort and privacy.
  • Utilizes appropriate infection control practices.
  • Interfaces accurately and efficiently in hospital decision support system.
  • Maintains proper par level of supplies and submits order requests well in advance of depletion.
  • Functions independently and performs as a team resource without prompting.
  • Accurately assesses and/or interprets data from echocardiograms relative to patient cardiac status.
  • Verifies physician order and patient ID in the performation of patient testing.
  • Effectively interacts with patients and families while providing procedural information and/or patient instructions before, during and after procedure.
  • Shows willingness to cross train and assume responsibilities outside of current area.
  • Attends 80% of unit staff meetings. Meetings from unattended staff meetings are read and signed.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Experience: 

    • Minimum of one (1) year of independent experience performing echocardiograms with spectral and color flow Doppler in an health care setting or a cardiology clinic is required, or a continuous structured internship of six (6) months in an acute health care setting.
    • Graduate of Cardiovascular Sonography certificate program.
    • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

    Licensure Minimum Requirement

    • BLS from American Heart Association 
    • Either American Registry or Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or The Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) credential.
    • Individuals currently employed within the department and role must obtain appropriate credential within one year from implementation of requirement.
    • Those hired from internship must obtain appropriate credential within six (six) months of hire
