Position Summary:
The lead surgical technologist, under the direct supervision of the direction of the Perioperative Services Director, accepts overall responsibility for a designated surgical area of specialty. The lead tech is responsible for assuring all equipment and instruments are operational. Ensures adequacy and organization of equipment, supplies and instruments. Knowledgeable regarding service specific equipment and instruments which are out for repair or need replacement.
Position Responsibilities:
• Assist surgical team in the scrubbing role according CHI St. Luke's policies and procedures.
• Maintain sterile field.
• Report immediately any breaks in aseptictechnique.
• Pass instruments, suture products, medication, and sponge materials to surgeon.
• Assist with retracting of tissue and organs, and suctioning by holding theretracting.
• Perform surgical counts with the RN according to policy and procedure.
• Proficiently function in the scrub role for all services provided.
• Function as a resource for at least one specific service.
• Utilize/open supplies judiciously, offers suggestions, improvements with focus on quality and cost containment.
• Work closely with the instrument room as service specialist/instrument liaison to assure provision of quality.
• Assist in housekeeping duties as directed to insure safe patient environment and an efficient room turnover.
Required Education
HS/GED
Preferred
Graduate of an accredited educational program for surgical technologists
Licensure Required
Certified Surgical Technician (CST) or Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C) or must qualify for grandfathering under Department of State Health Services-Health and Safety Code Title 4 Subtitle B Chapter 259
BLS through AHA
Experience Required
Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical experience as a certified professional and competency in designated specialties OR 3 years of recent clinical experience as a certified professional AND completion of an accredited educational program for surgical technologists
