JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE
The Financial Counselor will act as the key non-clinical contact when needs are identified related to patients finances and
health insurance in the cancer center.
ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Serves as the contact and representative regarding financial advocacy for patients in the CHI Saint Joseph Cancer
Center
2. Guides patients through and around financial barriers within the CHI Saint Joseph Cancer Center and CHI Saint
Joseph Health to ensure the patient understands anticipated costs, out of pocket estimates, and the coverage
their health insurance does or does not provide. This includes assisting the patient in applying for
Medicaid/Medicaid Coverage or expanding their current insurance as needed.
3. Maintaining communication with patients, families, and health care providers to ensure the patient understands
the costs of care and the frequency of treatment bills.
4. Direct patients to resources outside of financial navigation as needed (i.e. social work, RN Navigator, etc.)
5. Assists with enrollment and applications for financial assistance, free drug/copay assistance programs
6. Works with RN Navigator to anticipate which scans, procedures, treatments that may be needed for the patient
in order to anticipate financial impact
7. Answers all billing questions and works with other CHI Saint Joseph Health team members when there are
questions or discrepancies regarding a patient bill
8. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree
Required Licensure and Certifications:
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Two years of related experience in a healthcare environment,
specifically related to finances and billing.Strong customer service skills.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
