Responsibilities

The Neuroscience Publications Department at Barrow Neurological Institute leads the academic publishing industry in author services focused entirely on the neurosciences. We provide editorial and media expertise to support residents, fellows, attending physicians, and researchers at Barrow. Our illustrators, animators, graphic artists, and multimedia specialists work closely with authors to create elegant, accurate visual content using the latest industry standards and technology (including a state-of-the-art render farm) to achieve higher visibility and faster publication.

 

Neuroscience Publications is seeking a temporary Technical Artist to join our team! The candidate will support 3D animation production, workflows, and procedures to advance the academic publishing mission of all Barrow departments, including Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Research.


Essential functions:
● Support the medical animation team by troubleshooting 3D asset and scene issues, solving render problems, and addressing workstation and/or software complications as they arise.
● Assist Senior Technical 3D Artist with building pipeline scripts and toolsets for animation production and general department needs.
● Provide technical assistance to medical animation team as needed for shot assembly, render wrangling, 3D scene optimization, and automation.
● Support 3D asset archiving and cataloging.
● Collaborate with Senior Technical 3D Artist and Barrow Informatics to ensure compliance with latest cybersecurity guidelines.

 

Located in Phoenix, AZ, this is an in-person, 6-month temporary position. Individuals must live within driving distance of the Barrow campus.

Qualifications

 

REQUIREMENTS:


Expertise (two years’ experience preferred) with 3D computer animation, modeling and compositing software.

 

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Digital Art, or related field required.
1-3 years of experience in 3D animation and/or interactive media preferred.


DESIRED SKILLS
● Expertise with operating systems such as Unix/Linux and Windows.
● Networking domain knowledge.
● Tools for monitoring CG system health and performance.
● Disaster recovery.

● Expertise with animation tools like Maya and Houdini.

● Custom tools, advanced shading, rigging, and special effects as demonstrated in portfolio.● Expertise with digital sculpting and animation tools such as Zbrush and Maya 3D.
● Advanced shading, rigging, and special effects as demonstrated in portfolio.
● Render distribution software.
● Python, Bash scripting, Windows Batch, LUA.


The following software skills are preferable (but not required): Autodesk Maya, Blackmagic Design Fusion Studio or DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite, SideFX Houdini, V-Ray render engine, Substance Designer or Painter, Blender, C4D, or 3ds Max, a render manager software, Python, Lua, MEL scripting, Unreal, Unity, Godot, Mudbox, Wrap 3D, a database software, Linux.
