With future plans to expand, St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center, a 60,000 square foot hospital, includes a 12-bed full-service emergency department, a 24-bed inpatient unit, 2 operating rooms, 2 procedural rooms, dedicated space for diagnostic services, an ambulance bay and helipad. The campus features some of the most innovative uses of materials to promote patient safety, patient satisfaction and medical efficiency.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

Job Summary:

 

The Pre-Surgery Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the perioperative team, responsible for providing comprehensive, patient-centered nursing care to individuals undergoing surgical and/or procedural interventions. This role focuses on the admission, assessment, education, and preparation of patients prior to their procedure, ensuring they are medically optimized, emotionally prepared, and understand the plan of care. The Pre-Surgery RN acts as a patient advocate, collaborating with physicians, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a safe and positive surgical experience.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

Patient Assessment and Data Collection:

  • Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments, including medical history, surgical history, social history, allergies, current medications (including supplements and over-the-counter drugs), and review of systems.
  • Perform a physical assessment, vital signs, and baseline assessment relevant to the planned procedure.

Patient Education and Communication:

    • Provide clear and concise education to patients and their families regarding the planned procedure, anesthesia type, pre-operative instructions (e.g., NPO status, medication adjustments), expected recovery course, and post-operative care.
    • Address patient questions and concerns, alleviate anxieties, and provide emotional support.

Preparation for Surgery/Procedure:

    • Initiate and manage IV access, ensuring appropriate gauge and location.
    • Administer pre-operative medications as prescribed (e.g., anxiolytics, antibiotics).
    • Ensure all necessary pre-operative orders are completed and documented.
    • Verify patient identity and surgical site using established protocols

Job Requirements

Minimum:


AZ RN license 
American Heart Association BLS certification

 

Preferred:


BSN
Professional certification in area of specialty
One year recent acute care experience
