Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Patient Care Tech is a member of the healthcare team accountable for patient care supportive services under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to meet the needs of patients in order to provide safe quality care. The Patient Care Tech also facilitates department clerical responsibilities while maintaining proper communications etiquette with multiple people and multiple phone and intercom lines. Patient Care Tech may have access to or be required to distribute drugs, needles or syringes from storage locations, (such as large stock supplies, automated dispensing units and other carts) to/within patient care areas or treatment carts as defined by hospital policy/procedure.

 

Essential functions include but not limited to:

  • Clerical Skills: Competent and proficient in Health Information Systems, supply ordering and departmental data/reports
  • Technical Skills: Competent in psychomotor skills and technical procedures within scope of practice. Includes care of patient drains, tubes, special equipment, ADL's, mobility, Hospital Information System proficiency, I & O, response in emergency.
  • Documentation: Performs legible, timely, concise and accurate documentation according to policies and procedures. Proficient and competent with the computerized documentation system.
  • Organizational Skills: Uses appropriate organization, priority setting and problem solving skills.
  • Communication: Communicates clearly and effectively using proper communication etiquette and manages multiple phone and intercom lines. Uses medical terminology accurately. Includes reporting abnormal or change in patient condition to appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Maintains confidentiality.
  • Self Development: Accountable for self-directed learning and participation in continuing education to meet own professional development. Completes mandatory education timely.
 

Job Requirements

 

Required:

  • 6 months experience, within the last 3 years, in an acute care hospital setting, healthcare clinic, skilled nursing facility, or home health setting as a Care Assistant or Nurse Assistant, medical assistant or nursing student with one semester in clinical setting, or complete hospital patient care training.

  • AHA BLS

  • Basic computer skills/keyboarding/ Medical terminology course or equivalent knowledge

Preferred:

  • CA Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license
  • Google products; Microsoft Office Cerner/MS4
