More than 125 years later, St. Joseph's remains dedicated to its mission of caring for the poor and underserved. We are extremely proud to be a nationally recognized center for quality quaternary care, medical education and research. St. Joseph's includes the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute, Norton Thoracic Institute, Cancer Center at St. Joseph's, Ivy Brain Tumor Center, and St. Joseph's Level I Trauma Center (which is verified by the American College of Surgeons). The hospital is also a respected center for high-risk obstetrics, neuro-rehabilitation, orthopedics, and other medical services. St. Joseph’s is considered a sought-after destination hospital for treating the most complex cases from throughout the world. Every day, approximately 20 percent of the hospital’s patients have traveled from outside of Arizona and the United States to seek treatment at St. Joseph’s. Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Barrow Neurological Institute invites applications for a post-doc research position. The candidate will work closely with Dr. Andrew Yang (Pl of Human Neurophysiology & Neuromodulation [HNN] Lab) on a variety of interdisciplinary projects with a core focus on computational analysis of big human electrophysiology datasets. HNN utilizes high-throughout multiscale direct recordings of human brain activity combined with behavioral tasks naturalistic stimuli and intracranial stimulation to understand core circuit mechanisms and computational principles underlying our cognitive and emotional abilities as well as their perturbations in disease. The overarching goal is to provide translational links between human neurophysiology and clinical neuromodulation to guide the rational design of next-generation brain stimulation therapies for epilepsy as well as investigative indications in cognitive and psychiatric diseases. HNN collaborates with faculty throughout Barrow and ASU in engineering computer science neuroscience and psychology as well as industry partners in neuromodulation and brain-computer interface. The post-doc will serve as a project leader focused on population-level and single-unit electrophysiology of cognitive and affective processes that are distinctly human as well as their derangements in disorders such as epilepsy. Experiments are conducted in human patients implanted with stereoencephalography (sEEG) electrodes (during hospital admissions for seizure monitoring) or novel neuromodulation devices that allow sensing concurrent with therapeutic stimulation.

Primary duties include data collection and analysis developing scientific ideas and writing grant applications and manuscripts. The post-doc is expected to have an integral role in training and supervising junior lab members particularly related to software and hardware solutions for data storage as well as maintenance and design of data and image processing pipelines.

Required Qualifications: PhD in Biomedical Engineering Computer Science Electrical Engineering Neuroscience or other related areas of study Research experience in electrophysiology data science (machine learning signal processing network theory topological data analysis etc.) behavioral task design medical image processing and/or audiovisual stimuli/virtual environment design Track record of journal articles conference presentations abstracts in relevant areas of research Proficiency with computer programming (Matlab Python or equivalent) Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to function in a clinical environment to acquire data from patients; to interact in a positive and productive manner with a diverse lab community; to be self-motivated prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
