Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our SPD Tech, you will ensure patient safety and surgical efficiency by meticulously decontaminating, sterilizing, and assembling all medical instruments and equipment. Your precise work is fundamental to infection control and positive patient outcomes across clinical areas.

Every day you will expertly process surgical instruments, maintaining accurate documentation, testing equipment, and managing inventory according to strict protocols. You'll adhere to infection control standards, troubleshoot equipment, and contribute to a safe, efficient sterile processing environment.

To succeed, you'll need exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, excellent communication for coordination, and a profound commitment to sterile technique and patient safety. Self-motivation and adaptability are essential in this critical, fast-paced support service role.

  • Instrument Maintenance: Assembles and sorts instrument sets following instrument manual and arranges sets in appropriate instrument trays. Separates delicate and basic instruments, electrical cords, cables, and processes according to established procedures. Sorts and identifies special instruments for processing, e.g., power equipment, scopes, etc. Inspects each instrument for alignment and position when sorting. Checks for missing parts and straightens malleable instruments. Reports mal-functioning, missing, and broken instrumentation. Cleans and maintains equipment essential to assuring effective sterilization: ultrasonic machine, washer sterilizer, steam sterilizers, and plasma sterilizers. Demonstrates proper procedure for operating the steam and plasma sterilizers, washer sterilizer, and ultrasonic cleaner. Uses proper loading/unloading procedure. Upon completion of sterilization, stores instruments in sterile area and returns processed instrumentation, instrument trays, and equipment to appropriate nursing units.
  • Supply and Equipment Maintenance: Demonstrates proper procedures for cleaning, packaging, labeling, processing and storage of clean and sterile supplies. Stocks and tags medical supplies placed in Central Supply. Issues and returns supplies, using the computer to maintain an accurate inventory. Maintains clean and orderly work area. Wiping and dusts shelves, carts, work, and storage area. Routinely checks supplies/instruments for outdates. Replenishes depleted supplies in Central Service. Demonstrates ability to follow hospital/departmental procedures for cleaning and storing of equipment.
  • Department Support: Responds to all telephone requests promptly and accurately. Assists in the training of new personnel. Attends 80% of staff meetings and inservices. Attends all mandatory meetings. Ability to train new personnel with a positive team oriented attitude and job competence. Assists with annual physical inventory if necessary. Plans and executes staff in service meetings when assigned. Performs other assigned duties as required.
  • Records Maintenance: Records all logs completely and accurately, e.g., sterilized items, patient-charged equipment. Inventories patient- chargeable equipment accurately. Keeps an accurate log of QA measurements including but not limited to load counts, equipment monitors and tray surveillance.
  • Safety: Conscientious in duties and in following procedures that relates to Universal Precautions. Demonstrates a good understanding of distribution technique according to policy and procedures within the guidelines as described in Universal Precautions. Maintains low but safe amounts of medical supplies.
  • Other Duties: Takes verbal orders received from nursing units and acts accordingly to fill orders promptly. Collects/ distributes supplies/equipment for nursing units. Prepares surgical case carts based on requisitions from Surgery.

Required

  • Basic Life Support - CPR, upon hire


Preferred

  • Six to twelve months of related experience and
  • Previous acute care experience inhospital with supplies withemphasis on knowledge of medical supplies.
