Job Summary and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Emergency Services Director, this position is part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team, conducts activities which focus on the emotional and developmental needs of children and families using play and other forms of communication and education. Assesses, recommends and develops programs.

  • Assesses, plans and implements individual and/or group activities for pediatric patients.
  • Determines appropriate activities, incorporating therapeutic and medical plan with consideration of the developmental and interest level of the patient.
  • Assesses patient progress toward established goals and confers in a professional manner with the person(s) most closely associated with the active management of the patient.
  • Collaborates with ancillary departments in the implementation of patient care and appropriate treatment.
  • Participates in the preparation of pediatric patients for planned hospitalization, surgery and/or procedures.
  • Assists patients and families in selecting, developing and supporting coping mechanisms during hospitalization.
  • Assesses the pediatric environment and recommends programs and policies that will provide a safe, therapeutic and age-appropriate setting.
  • Facilitates family centered care.
  • Provides age specific, emotional and psychosocial support needed for patients and their families, including how to cope with death and the dying process.
  • Assists in the plan of care as ordered by the physician.
  • Works with the patient and family throughout the hospital experience.
  • Implements diversional and educational activities with consideration to age, culture and educational background.

Job Requirements

Minimum:

  • Bachelors Degree, Child Life, Child Development or related field.
  • One year in acute health.
  • Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS).
  • Basic Life Support - CPR (BLS-CPR)
