Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Lab Assistant, you will play a crucial role in solving diagnostic mysteries, bringing us one step closer to effectively treating patient illnesses and injuries.

Every day you will utilize your expertise and our advanced technology to precisely collect, prepare, and process a diverse range of patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for various diagnostic tests.

To be successful in this role, you will possess a foundational understanding of laboratory procedures, demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, and maintain an eager commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

  • Provides a safe environment for patients, families and customers based on age-specific needs. E: No complaints and at least 2 validated examples of self initiated actions that make the environment safe for any age group. M: 0-2 validated complaints or observations of failure to provide safety related to age-specific needs of any age group. DNM: Three or more validated complaints or observations of failure to provide for safety related to age-specific needs of any age group.
  • Accurately labels specimens. E: N/A M: No patient ID errors per year. DNM: One or more patient ID errors per year, or does not consistently use the Hand Held Specimen Collection system, or retraining or corrective action required
  • Use standard technique, successfully collects blood either by venipuncture or capillary puncture, following established procedures and protocols. E: Often provides co-worker support with difficult collections. Fully competent in the collection of venipuncture and capillary blood collections on patients including newborns. M: Successfully collects blood within 2 attempts, at a rate of one collection per 5-10 minutes. Meets goal of 30 minutes from order to in-lab time 80% of the time for STAT draws. Prioritizes work appropriately. Seldom requires support from a co-worker and no patient complaints. If required, can perform capillary blood collections on newborns but not always successfully in the attempt. DNM: Frequently requires support from a co-worker, or retraining or corrective action.
  • The department as a whole, meets lab and hospital QM/QI monitor targets for timely collection and transport of blood specimens. E: Lab exceeds current for specimen collection. M: Lab meets goal 30 minutes from order to in-lab time 80% of the time for STAT draws and meets goals of other Lab Council and hospital initiatives involving specimen collection. DNM: Lab does not meet current goals for specimen collection.
  • Communication techniques result in understanding of all ages served. (Non applicable for non patient care assignments). E: No complaints and at least 2 validated observations of outstanding communication techniques. M: Zero-2 validated complaints or observations of failure to use age-specific communication techniques. DNM: Three or more validated complaints or observations of failure to use age-specific communication techniques.
  • The department, as a whole, meets current Lab Council patient satisfaction goals for the assigned facility. E: Lab exceeds current Lab Council goal for patient satisfaction. M: Lab meets current Lab Council goal for patient satisfaction. DNM: Lab does not meet current Lab Council goal for patient satisfaction.

Job Requirements

Required

  • 6 months experience in a Microbiology Laboratory and/ or Microbiology Coursework., upon hire and
  • 6 months experience in an acute care facility., upon hire
