Job Summary and Responsibilities

As an Adjutant Chaplain, you will be a medical team clinician who supports a facility’s Spiritual Care Department in delivering a healing environment for patients, families, and staff.

 

Every day, you will engage with patients, families, and staff around spiritual issues, hope, dying, grief, stress, caregiving, prayer, etc. You will be familiar with and able to articulate the ethical and religious directives for Catholic healthcare. Your daily activities will also include networking with community clergy and congregations, providing a continuum of spiritual/pastoral care across settings, and utilizing systems-thinking to personalize holistic care for patients and staff.

 

To be successful in your role, you will strategically contribute to a healing environment by engaging patients, families, and staff on spiritual matters, demonstrating a profound understanding of ethical and religious directives for Catholic healthcare. You will demonstrate exceptional ability to negotiate solutions among diverse viewpoints, network effectively with community clergy, and apply systems-thinking to personalize holistic care, thereby extending compassionate spiritual support across all settings.

Job Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Spiritual Care, Arts, or equivalent bachelor’s degree from a college, university or institution accredited by the applicant’s institutional faith body. (For all degrees, study in a theologically related field is preferred) 
  • An equivalency may be granted if the applicant can document four (4) years of employment in an occupation that requires direct engagement with people, with at least two (2) of those years in ministry related work with a faith-based organization or body
    1. At hire, applicant must have at least one unit of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) or applicant may enroll in a CommonSpirit Health (CSH) approved internal Clinical Pastoral Orientation (CPO) and complete the same within 12 months of hire. If the CPO option is utilized, a full unit of CPE that meets the standards of #2 below must be completed within 24 months of hire
    2. CPE Units are required to be from an entity that is recognized by an accrediting agency listed by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or an internal CSH approved CPE program aligning with the competencies held by an entity recognized by the DOE
    3. Continuing Educational Standards Required: Adjutant Chaplains are required to complete 15 hours of continuing education in chaplaincy related topics annually (CY), except when enrolled in CPO/E (cf. Mountain Region ICCE guidelines)
  • Two (2) of years in ministry related work with a faith-based organization or body
  • Ecclesiastical Affiliation: Supply a statement or declaration of good standing from the faith body to which they belong

Physical Requirements
Sedentary work - prolonged periods of sitting and exert up to 10 lbs. force occasionally

 

Preferred

  • One (1) year of successful pastoral ministry experience in a hospital or other health care setting
