Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Sr. Cancer Registry Tech, you will expertly lead the identification, collection, abstracting, coding, staging, and follow-up of cancer cases, rigorously ensuring data accuracy and regulatory compliance.

Every day you will meticulously identify and confirm cancer diagnoses, applying in-depth knowledge of disease processes to accurately abstract and assign codes and stages using established systems. You will maintain current guideline knowledge, enter data into the registry database, and ensure compliance with all state and federal standards and productivity metrics.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, advanced problem-solving skills, and comprehensive expertise in cancer registry operations, data integrity, and compliance, vital for cancer surveillance and patient care.

  • Identifies potential cancer cases through a variety of sources, including but not limited to: pathology reports, radiology reports, surgery schedules, admission/discharge lists, and other relevant medical records.
  • Reviews electronic medical records to confirm cancer diagnoses and determine eligibility for inclusion in the cancer registry.
  • Knowledgeable of the cancer disease processes (benign and malignant), diagnostic methods and procedures and treatment methods.
  • Abstracts pertinent information from medical records, including patient demographics, medical history, diagnostic findings, treatment modalities, and follow-up information.
  • Assigns accurate codes for primary site, histology, grade, and stage of cancer using established coding systems (e.g., ICD-O-3, SEER Site/Histology and Store Coding Manual).
  • Applies appropriate staging systems (e.g., AJCC TNM Staging, SEER Summary Staging) to determine the extent of disease.

Job Requirements

Required

  • Associates program for Certified Oncology Data Specialist
  • One (1)+ years recent abstracting experience in a cancer registry
  • Strong understanding of cancer diagnosis, treatment and prognosis
  • Excellent abstracting skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a remote environment
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Workspace, Registry Software System
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR or ODS)

 

or

  • High School Graduate

and

  • Course work in and/or experience using anatomy and physiology and medical terminology, cancer disease process and cancer treatment methods
  • Four (4)+ years experience in multi-EMR applications and ability to capture needed information from all sources
  • Strong understanding of cancer diagnosis, treatment and prognosis
  • Excellent abstracting skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a remote environment
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Workspace, Registry Software System
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR or ODS)
