Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Nurse Extern, you will gain invaluable hands-on clinical experience, working alongside experienced Registered Nurses to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice. You will be instrumental in learning to provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a dynamic healthcare setting.

Every day you will assist the nursing staff with basic patient care activities, including vital sign measurements, personal care, ambulation, and documentation, under direct supervision. You will be expected to observe and participate in various clinical procedures, develop critical thinking skills, engage with patients and families, and adhere to all hospital policies and safety protocols, all while actively seeking learning opportunities.

To be successful in this role, you must be currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program, possess strong communication skills, a genuine desire to learn and contribute, a compassionate attitude, and a foundational understanding of nursing principles.

  • Performs basic assessment, including vital signs, evaluation of patient needs.
  • Performs personal care as needed.
  • Calculates intake and output accurately.
  • Performs simple tests such as bedside glucose monitoring.
  • Demonstrates nursing skills such as oral and tracheal suctioning, ostomy care, insertion of nasogastric tubes, care of tube feeding, insertion and discontinuation of urinary catheters and drain care.
  • Demonstrates proper safety techniques and body mechanics. Demonstrates proper principles of infection control and sterile techniques. Demonstrates proper procedures for medication administration.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Completion of one year in an accredited school of nursing program
  • Completion of one medical surgical clinical rotation.
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT-AHA (CT CPRBLS)
  • Able to communicate and write clearly in English.
  • Work at a fast pace in an active work environment.
  • Stand and walk for prolong periods of time.
  • Must be currently enrolled and in good standing
