This role involves advanced histologic techniques to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination, aiding pathologists in disease diagnosis. Key responsibilities include receiving and preparing biological materials using accepted histological methods like labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping. The position requires preparing and evaluating necessary stains, reagents, and solutions according to established procedures.
A critical aspect of the role is the ability to independently assess and determine appropriate handling and processing methods for specimens, including complex and difficult samples. The individual acts as a technical resource, monitoring departmental technical aspects and providing information. They actively participate in performance improvement programs and are responsible for quality control, preventive maintenance, and advanced troubleshooting of instruments and stains to ensure optimal performance.
Adherence to all accreditation and regulatory guidelines, particularly national patient safety goals, is essential. The role also requires staying informed about new technologies and methods in areas like immunohistochemistry (IHC) and general histochemistry, and assisting with their implementation. The successful candidate must be able to multitask effectively and work with minimal or no supervision, leveraging their knowledge in pathology, management, education, and relevant regulations.
Opt 1: Bachelor Degree with a combination of 30 semester hrs of biology and chemistry (must include both), AND successful completion of an accredited Histotechnology program.
Opt 2: Bachelor Degree with a combination of 30 semester hrs of biology and chemistry (must include both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining.
