Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Surgical Technologist at CHI St. Joseph's Health, you will help prepare the operating room and surgical team so they can successfully perform a variety of surgical procedures for patients. You are a vital member of the clinical team, ensuring that every procedure is executed with precision, safety, and care.

 

Every day you will set up surgical equipment and instruments, assist the surgical team, and ensure a sterile environment. You will be expected to adapt quickly, collaborate effectively within the OR team, and contribute directly to the patient's healing process.

Preoperative Duties

  • Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Gathering, checking, and opening supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
  • Performing the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.
  • Setting up the sterile back table and Mayo stands with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
  • Performing initial instrument, sharp, and sponge counts with the circulator.
  • Assisting team members with gowning and gloving, and assisting with patient draping to establish the sterile field.
  • Participating in the surgical site and patient verification during the "Time Out" procedure.
  • Securing tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.

Intraoperative Duties

  • Anticipating the needs of the surgeon by proactively passing instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Measuring and passing medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions.
  • Holding retractors, sponging, or suctioning the operative site as directed.
  • Applying electrocautery to clamps on bleeders and cutting suture material as requested.
  • Coordinating the camera during endoscopic surgery.
  • Maintaining the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Performing additional counts as necessary and preparing specimens for transport.

Postoperative Duties

  • Preparing sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
  • Cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assisting the team with terminal room cleaning and prepping the OR for the next patient.
  • Participating in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure continuous excellence in patient care.

 

Job Requirements

Required

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
