Position Summary
The Nuclear Medicine Tech coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks, tests and determinations involving the utilization of radioactive materials and measurement instrumentation.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- ESSENTIAL
- Utilizes innovative customer service techniques to provide a positive patient care experience for the patient and their family.
- Acts professionally in all dealings with internal and external customers to promote a working environment that focuses on the patient experience and not operational rivalries or roadblocks to care. Establishes and maintains lines of communication with all other staff members and radiologist to insure an effective and harmonious working environment. Communicates effectively with patients and their families about the procedure to be performed in order to obtain information and to offer reassurance.
- Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical procedures to include in vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection and measurement instrumentation including stationary imaging devices, scintillation gamma and apparatus for in vitro counting.
- Calibrate and draw up radiopharmaceutical materials for administration to patients; formulate radiopharmaceutical materials from pre-prepared kits. Calibrate instruments and review calibration data to detect trends indicating instrument malfunction. Calculate data to include results of patient studies and radioactive decay. Evaluate recorded images for technical quality.
- Process computerized image data to include function curves and reconstructed SPECT images.
- Perform Nuclear Cardiology studies including image acquisition, processing and monitoring patient vital signs. Perform EKG prep, tracing and monitors for obvious change during cardiac studies. Assist in quality assurance program relating to calibration and maintenance of equipment. Act in a team leader capacity. Assist with the education and training of new physicians (interns, residents, fellows).
- Assists in the development and evaluation of new procedures and techniques to meet the needs of specific protocols as required. Consult with physician concerning the application of nuclear medicine procedures and techniques.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision plans, organizes and performs nuclear cardiology procedures to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for physician diagnosis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients according to protocol.
- Accesses venous puncture for saline lock insertion.
- Performs daily quality control and safety procedures and maintains accurate records.
- Administers patient care within the scope of practice for a nuclear medicine technologist.
- Participates in ALARA Program, following appropriate protocols.
- Keeps current with NRC/OSHA/IDPH/ICANL regulations and updates.
- Maintain and monitors supplies including radiopharmaceuticals.
- Maintains safe and clean workplace.
- Assists with Clinical/Didactic Training of Nuclear Medicine students, including Iowa Heart Center and Mercy College.
- Responsible for completion of IHC Nuclear competencies.
- Required to travel to other IHC offices as needed.
- Operate required vehicle(s) in a safe manner to perform required duties of the position.
Prepares and reviews medical records and nurses` notes, assess residents to evaluate their physical and emotional status. Monitors resident activity and provides nursing care according to the physicians` orders, care plans, established standards and facility policies. Coordinates and assists or prepares for new admissions, transfers, and discharge of residents. Transcribes physicians` telephone orders. Communicates with residents, family members, and other interdisciplinary team members and management regarding resident status.
Prepares and administers medications as ordered by the physician in accordance with nursing standards and facility policies. Signs, dates, and performs all charting and record keeping in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Supervises and directs the CNA/CMA staff in the delivery of resident care and monitors their performance.
Understands, complies with and promotes all rules regarding resident rights.
Assists and participates in developing and implementing a written care plan for individual residents that addresses the needs of the resident.
Participates in in-service training, assists and implementing orientation programs and job skills training, and maintaining professional competence.
Monitors environment and care practices of nursing personnel to ensure compliance with established safety, fire and disaster, infection control and all other departmental policies and procedures are followed, ensures cleanliness and safety of work and treatment areas.

St Elizabeth is a Level III high-risk facility with 11 LDR’s + 2 OB ED Beds, 2 OR’s, 23 Postpartum rooms, and a 27 bed Level III NICU. Our practitioners include OB/GYN, Family Practice and Nurse Midwives. Our facility offers resources to OB Hospitalists, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Neonatology experts, and anesthesiology access 24/7. In addition, we offer neonatal transport services.
As a Registered Nurse, you will be responsible for delivering the highest quality patient care according to the specific orders of each patient’s individual physician. This will involve, utilizing your knowledge and skills to educate patients and their families on prevention and healthy habits.
