GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Performance Excellance Coach serves as an internal consultant to management, staff, and providers in the areas of process improvement, organizational development, change management, performance monitoring, and statistical analysis. They will provide expertise in successfully applying process improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, Workout, PDSA/PDCA, Change Acceleration Process, etc and serves as a project facilitator/manager and technical resource for teams working on major, complex performance improvement efforts. Creates and uses standard performance improvement tools and training to continually educate management, staff and providers in performance improvement. Focuses on better healthcare value and quality, including the improvement of clinical outcomes, patient experience, safety, costs, revenue, productivity, efficiency, employee and provider satisfaction, and process reliability
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serves as a project facilitator/manager and technical resource for teams working on major, complex performance improvement efforts, focusing on better healthcare value and quality, to include the improvement of clinical outcomes, patient experience, safety, costs, revenue, productivity, efficiency, employee and provider satisfaction, and process reliability.
- Serves as a technical advisor and internal consultant to management, staff, and provider s on the use of performance improvement tools and techniques, analytical techniques, and statistical applications.
- Assists in the establishment of operational performance measurements and the monitoring of trends in key performance indicators to evaluate efficiency, effectiveness, cost, etc., using available information systems data. Uses data from appropriate external sources, including comparative databases.
- Applies appropriate change management methods to promote implementation of change. Facilitates organizational change by helping to prepare personnel to accept and actively participate in new changes, through communication, coaching, and educational workshops.
- Analyzes assigned areas of operations for potential improvement opportunities and makes applicable recommendations in conjunction with management, staff and providers for process, system, procedure, and operational changes to improve healthcare value and quality.
- Provide project status updates, feedback, and appropriate reporting on assigned projects through preparation and delivery of presentations and other project tracking systems.
- Works with Performance Excellence staff and others to maximize potential improvement efforts and understanding of opportunities across the organization, as well as to identify, share, and leverage best practices with organizational stakeholders.
- Provides direction, coordination, mentoring, and coaching of performance improvement staff as assigned by director.

The Senior Performance Excellence Consultant within the CHI Texas Division is a hospital based, or divisional, resource that manages process improvement efforts for their organization using structured Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. This position works with department and the hospital leadership to identify opportunities, prioritize strategic improvements, facilitate and manage multidisciplinary teams and provide coaching to Green Belts and other Lean Practitioners to ensure structured problem solving is applied and monitoring is put in place for sustainable improvements. Responsible for making sure all departments in their organization are properly following the Lean Management System deployed by the CHI Texas Division.
1. Provide coaching to local improvement leaders, physicians, and staff in the application of standardized methodologies in Lean and other improvement methodologies (Examples include: Lean Six Sigma DMAIC, GE Cap and Workout, Toyota Kata, Kaizen).
2. Assist with managing the hospital based repository for Lean and Six Sigma based learning and best practices, as they pertain to growth and training of staff in the areas of Lean Six Sigma, Toyota Kata and Lean Management Systems:
a. Teach to the DMAIC structure of Lean Six Sigma,
b. Teach the core tools of lean as learned through the KATA and TWI rollout,
c. Timely use of Kaizen/Rapid Improvement and Work Out methodologies to help fast track improvements when necessary.
d. Use of Change Management tools to ensure staff are prepared for change.
e. Share playbooks, best practices, lessons learned, and case studies built within the divisional Performance Excellence Team.
3. Coach leaders throughout their Lean Management work, including those at the Tier 1 (department level), Tier II (director and mid-management level) and Tier III (executive level).
4. Provide guidance to hospital leaders by facilitating the identification of improvement opportunities, setting priorities, communicating the annual “True North” initiatives, and ensuring all departments perform and track improvement work their staff will complete to impact the organization’s priority goals.
5. Facilitate and co-manage the Alignment Steering Committee for the hospital, made up of local executive, middle management and front line staff to address and drive performance improvement projects.
6. Lead hi-leverage process improvement projects within the context of the organization’s improvement plan as recognized by both locally identified initiatives and divisional priorities.
7. Review and analyze detailed labor, labor productivity and other operational performance data on a regular basis, identifying areas of needed improvement and prioritizing those areas for assistance.
8. Develop and implement tools that can be used by hospital leaders to improve processes and monitor results.
9. Facilitate the development of action plans and implementation schedules for performance improvement initiatives and recommendations. Assist with the implementation of plans and recommendations when appropriate.
10. Establish project scope and timeline with appropriate stakeholders and manage projects to achieve intended objectives while anticipating and communicating deviations from the project timeline.
11. Develop and maintain project documentation to include project proposals, charter, scope document, test scenarios, project schedule and test plans, etc. Prepare project status and reports as needed.
12. Apply project management techniques to include modeling, evaluating, selecting and implementing appropriate solutions that lead to successful project outcomes, using project tools such as external benchmarking, scorecard analysis, workload measurement, performance improvement theory, cost-benefit analysis, knowledge sharing, coaching and mentoring.
