JOB SUMMARY:Observes, identifies and documents cardiac rhythms and pulse oximetry readings of patients monitored through the central monitor station.  Responds appropriately to the occurrences of the life-threatening or potentially life-threatening arrhythmias.  Communicates patient’s rhythm and monitor alerts effectively with RN caring for patient and other department personnel as applicable.   - OPERATES PATIENT MONITORING EQUIPMENT      Maintains log of physician orders for telemetry monitors and for pulse oximetry      Initiates telemetry or pulse oximetry within 30 minutes of receiving physician order      Admits, discharges, suspends patients in the monitor bank.            Changes alarm limits as appropriate for safe monitoring and per order.      Verifies that leads are in place when tracing deviates from anticipated pattern or rhythm.             Locates and prints rhythms from “History”      Operates essential equipment in the central monitor station including transmitters, monitor banks, and printer              - PERFORMS EKG’S     Actively identifies the patient as the appropriate patient for the procedure           Applies EKG leads using cardiac landmarks and records ECG       Records patient demographics in the EKG cart prior to obtaining EKG   - INTERPRETS CARDIAC RHYTHMS and PULSE OXIMETRY      Correctly measures PR and QRS interval and rate.      Identifies rate and rhythm of monitor strips      Recognizes significant changes in rate and/or cardiac rhythm.            Identifies life-threatening and/or potentially life-threatening arrhythmias.    Successfully completes annual dysrrythmia competency.      Identifies normal pulse oximetry readings and pulse oximetry range specific for each patient                                 - DOCUMENTS CARDIAC RHYTHM and PULSE OXIMETRY      Records patient’s rhythm every 2 hours on appropriate form.      Documents ectopy and/or other transient rhythms.                         Obtains representative rhythm strip every 8 hours, analyzes and mounts for patient record.      Records rhythm strip to document significant changes in rate and/or rhythm.      Delivers representative rhythm strips and copy of unit telemetry log to assigned unit      Documents pulse oximetry readings every 8 hours.          - MAINTAINS EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES      When patient is admitted, verifies TTX number of transmitter with TTX number assigned room.      Verifies each shift the location of all transmitters, ECG cables, and pulse oximetry on assigned units and documents.      Cleans remote transmitters and cables between patient use.      Promptly reports malfunctions of monitoring equipment to clinical engineering.      Notifies supervisor when monitor inventory is low as defined in the policy      Notifies supervisor when monitor is discovered missing     - COMMUNICATES EFFECTIVELY       Notifies nurse on the patient care unit when unable to obtain patient ECG or pulse oximetry signal.       Notifies nurse of significant change in rate, rhythm of cardiac monitor or oxygen saturation reading of pulse oximetry.       Notifies nurse by emergency phone system in the event of life threatening dysrhythmia or pulse oximetry reading.       Escalates communication to supervisor when unable to receive a response to alerts when notifying the patient care unit       Communicates with the patient at a level that the patient can comprehend.       Explains the procedure to the patient       Ensures that communication in the presence of the patient is patient related.
