Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Surgical Services Nursing Director, the Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a registered nurse with specialized education. The development of specific technical skills enables the RNFA to assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for registered nurses without RNFA education and training. Intraoperatively, the RNFA functions interdependently with the surgeon and applies knowledge, skill and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient. This position requires on-call with a 30 minute response time.
The RNFA is under the continuous, direct and on-site supervision of the physician performing the surgical procedure. The RNFA shall not be expected to replace or assume the responsibilities of the physician performing the surgical procedure.
Essential Duties:
- Applies nursing process to direct patient care through assessment, analysis of collected data, development of a plan of care and implementation and evaluation of effectiveness of nursing interventions/actions in relation to intended goal.
- Provides adequate information and instruction to the patient, family and significant other.
- Provides for an environment conducive to patient and staff safety. Conforms to hospital policies and procedures.
- Performs in-depth assessment of patients and is able to correlate information to plan for the provision of needs in the Recovery Room department.
- Maintains knowledge of narcotic antagonists.
- Skillfully applies principles of asepsis and infection control.
- Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate preventative and/or corrective actions to ensure a safe environment for the patient and surgical team throughout the perioperative experience.
- Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.
- Handles and dissects tissues in collaboration with the surgeon.
- Clamps blood vessels, coagulates bleeding points, ligates vessels and other procedures in collaboration with the surgeon to achieve hemostasis.
- Sutures muscle, fascia, subcutaneous and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon.
- Places drains as surgically indicated.
- Evaluates the outcomes of nursing care and ensures continuity of care by communicating pertinent patient information to PACU staff.
- Effectively communicates with surgeon and surgical team.
- Reports any life safety issues, environmental concerns or process deviation to immediate supervisor.
