Verifies that Care Value patient assignments are made prior to start of shift and maintained throughout the shift.
Inspects each room after each patient discharge and prior to new patient admission to assure all equipment is present and in working order
Takes minutes, types, and maintains file for Unit Staff meetings and Unit Council meetings.
- COMMUNICATION
Acts as receptionist for the unit, providing excellent customer service.
Answers the telephone promptly and courteously by identifying unit, name and title.
Responds to call lights appropriately and relays messages to appropriate nursing personnel.
Relays all communication accurately and timely to the proper recipients.
Assists visitors as appropriate.
Demonstrates communication appropriate to various age groups and stakeholders.
- RECORDS MANAGEMENT
Serves as resource for Electronic Health Record use
Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
Performs admission, transfer and discharge functions to facilitate patient flow.
Submits accurate patient charges, as required
Enters written or faxed physician orders, except medications, into the electronic system with accuracy.
Scans written Physician medication orders to Pharmacy
Assembles and maintains patient’s Medical Record with appropriate chart forms.
Prepares consent forms accurately.
Maintains accuracy and completeness of information in patient record.
Monitors chart location in accordance with policy
Requests and retrieves old charts from Medical Records as per physician orders.
- MANAGEMENT OF SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT
Orders departmental supplies for daily operation of the unit.
Requests specialty beds and equipment as indicated on physician orders.
Completes and forwards maintenance requests.
Assures that equipment is returned to central processing in a timely manner and that equipment on the unit is clean
Arranges for repair of broken equipment and tracks the equipment
- EDUCATION
Attends inservices and or workshops for continuing education requirements according to hospital policy.
Participates in Unit meetings, Unit Coordinator meetings, and Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
Documents professional competency through LEARN and annual competency process.

- Access unit census
- Verify that patient assignments are completed in Care Value
- Monitor that all portable computer equipment i.e. laptops and handheld devices are accounted for on the unit, are charged and are clean
- Track which care givers are assigned to each portable computer device
- Verify that batteries for unit Vocera/phone equipment are being charged and unused equipment is being charged
- Monitor that all Vocera/phone equipment is accounted for on the unit
- Track which care givers are assigned to each Vocera/phone device
- View unit orders/tasks for follow up using CareCompass
- Enter written or faxed physician orders into the electronic system
- Scan written physician medication orders to Pharmacy
- Round in each empty patient room to assure that it is clean and all equipment is in working order. Test bed controls, oxygen flowmeter, suction gauge, all room and bathroom lights, telephone, television
- Round on unit to assure that dirty equipment and meal trays have been taken to appropriate departments and that trash on biohazard room has been emptied.
- Verify that the following unit logs are completed:
- Crash Cart
- Medication refrigerator
- Specialty unit procedure carts i.e. chest cart, etc
- Complete the following unit logs:
- Temperature for each refrigerator on unit except staff food refrigerator
- CLIA temperature and humidity
- Glucometer cleaning
- Check that glucometer controls’ open and expiration dates are on bottles and that they are not expired.
- Verify that all refrigerators and microwaves are clean. Clean if necessary
- Discard expired food/beverages, open containers, and unlabeled food in patient refrigerators
- Order unit supplies and patient nourishments
- Check bulletin boards for outdated material. Remove outdated materials, post new materials including: most recent patient satisfaction data, unit dashboard, core measure data
- Go through all supplies looking for expired supplies i.e. lab tubes, solutions, etc.
Unit Coordinator Monthly Task List
- Place new log sheet for the current month in each log book
- Remove previous month’s logs from all log books so that only the current month is on the unit.
- File previous month’s logs as directed by manager
- Post current month’s quality data on bulletin boards
- Collect and submit Hand Hygiene audit to Infection Control
- Complete the unit’s Readiness Rounds for Environment
- Type minutes for Unit Staff Meeting and Unit Council Meeting

Essential Duties
- Performs receptionist and support duties at the assigned unit; handles incoming and outgoing communications, transfers calls appropriately, greets and assists visitors, answers questions in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintains a neat and organized work environment; orders, stocks and replenishes supplies and equipment as necessary; identifies and reports problems with supplies or equipment; enters equipment repair requests in system, tags equipment and removes from service.
- Maintains a safe work and patient environment, adhering to the hospital’s Safety, Risk Management, Regulatory Standards and infection prevention.
- Provides general support activities for the unit.
- Performs related duties as required.
Assists with the efficient operation of the department. Responsibilities includes receiving incoming calls and visitors, facilitating communication among staff and maintaining department records.
ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge process

- Checks and documents refrigerator temperatures as delegated, reporting variances to appropriate personnel

- Maintains a safe environment by responding to all bed alarms, call lights, telephones and alerting the correct person
- Keeps patient environment clean, Performs comfort rounds, keeps hallways clear of obstruction, no food or drink at the workstation, reports safety issues and broken equipment appropriately, and adheres to patient safety precautions
- Communicates with patient’s family, physicians, and unit personnel and peers in an accurate, courteous, and professional manner
- Acts as receptionist for unit; has limited use of the hospital information systems according to hospital policy dependent on the need of unit. This can include, but not limited to: consulting in Cerner, navigate through Cerner, discharge patients, put milestones into tele tracking, maintain paper charts and checking on MD orders
