Dual role as Technician and Sonography student combines department technician responsibilities and department specific sonographer clinical training.  Contributes to the safe, efficient operation of the Heart Institute by assisting the physicians, RNs and Sonographers in performing diagnostic and / or therapeutic procedures and report dissemination in Heart Institute Non-Invasive Services.   Performs designated procedures and tasks as assigned as kloappropriate for demonstrated competencies as assigned.  Completes department competency based ultrasound imaging training.   -  Gives direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the sonographer or RN’s. - Prepares and sets up for all procedures ensuring that the correct equipment and supplies are available during the case. - Applies monitoring equipment, obtains vital signs, documents patient data and information as appropriate for various procedures. - Ability to assist as needed with equipment and supplies as appropriate. - Knowledge of all complex and therapeutic procedures performed in the department. - Ability to set up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of case. Assists with room turnover. - Able to recognize and communicate any patient issues to RN or physician during the procedure. - Maintains supplies and stocks procedure rooms and travel carts during down time. - Assists with tracking locations and maintaining inventory of equipment. - Disinfects and cleans scopes and equipment according to hospital policy and manufacturer guidelines. - Performs other duties as assigned. - Manages reports and expedites completion and distribution. - Completes department log books and schedules. - Performs 12 lead EKG’s. - Processes EKG’s in MUSE system. - Completes competency based training for ultrasound imaging under direction of the Imaging Coordinator. - Performs ultrasound studies under supervision of credentialed sonographer for specified modality.

Job Summary: The Student Sonographer performs ultrasound examinations at a technical level in accordance with department protocols and applicable regulatory requirements, under the direction of a licensed provider.   Essential Duties: Executes all varieties of diagnostic ultrasound exams presently offered by the department; performs all examinations in accordance with American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) standards and department protocols; determines correct techniques to obtain images of the highest quality and resolution; determines suitable areas for needle aspirations and/or tissue biopsies for pathologic diagnosis; performs intra-operative determines provisional diagnoses and participates (along with supervising Radiologist) in the final exam diagnosis. Serves as a liaison between patients, interpreting physicians (Radiologists) and referring physicians; explains testing procedures to patient; ensures that emergent exam results are relayed promptly to the appropriate physician or medical floor. Utilizes appropriate educational resources to maintain currency in diagnostic sonography, and assists in various educational services relating to both staff and patients. Performs incidental office duties as necessary to maintain the completeness of the patient record; ensures that patient data is entered correctly and that patients are billed appropriately. Will assume responsibility for the safe, efficient and proper operation of the ultrasound equipment.   Key Responsibilities   * Produce high quality ultrasound images and obtain appropriate measurements for each exam. * Recognize the sonographic appearance of normal and abnormal tissue structures and provide the best image quality for documentation. * Document all applicable patient and procedure data consistently and correctly. * Obtain and evaluate pertinent patient history and physical findings that may affect the sonographic examination. * Explain procedures adequately to patients to maximize patient comfort and cooperation. * Appropriate monitoring during all phases of procedure with special care taken to insure patient emotional and physical well-being. * Communicate patient information in a professional and courteous manner to patients and to referring physician offices as required. * Maintain the ultrasound equipment for cleanliness and ensure proper equipment maintenance and equipment safety. * Calibrate and maintain equipment and order supplies when needed. * Schedule and coordinate tests. * Prepare and maintain operational logs. * Assist with Quality Assurance/Improvements audits and activities as required. * Perform other duties as assigned.
