The Risk Manager provides risk management support to departments and staff at every level of the locally assigned organization. Responsible for the overall implementation, administration and participation in the development of the facility’s risk management program. Utilizing CommonSpirit Health’s (CommonSpirit) enterprise risk management program framework, the position is responsible for the identification, implementation and ongoing evaluation of loss prevention and loss mitigation strategies which encompass patient, employee and environmental loss exposures. Utilizes claim management strategies to reduce or minimize the amount or severity of financial loss including the identification and reporting of potential claims, preserving evidence and completing investigations in collaboration with the CommonSpirit National Claim Operations Team. Provides support and assistance to assigned defense counsel. Coordinate activities related to litigation discovery, depositions and mediations. Works with outside legal counsel to review notices of discovery for active litigation. Assists with scheduling and coordination of all on site depositions. Prepares and communicates claim related information at least quarterly to facility leadership and other stakeholders.
2. Promotes the positive impact of risk management by developing and providing risk management orientation to new staff and continuing education on loss prevention for providers, management and other staff.
3. Management of the Incident Reporting Information System (IRIS), which includes reporting and managing incidents, ensuring accuracy of the safety event type selected, developing andommunicating aggregate data reporting to departments, service lines and/or committees in order to reduce exposures or potential harm to patients, employees or loss of physical assets.
4. Partners with National and Local support services such as Medical Staff Services, Legal, Claims, Quality, Corporate Responsibility Program, Clinical Services, Patient Relations/Advocacy, and Facility Management to address safety concerns and implement risk reduction strategies. Provides risk management support and counsel to operational and clinical leaders.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Assures that the mission of Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines is lived by assisting, supporting and organizing the staff and activities of the Centralized Staffing (CS) Department, as requested by Department management and nursing leadership. Monitors and adjusts staffing on an ongoing basis for nursing departments. Fulfills operational responsibilities including scheduling, data maintenance and communications for the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Uses labor tracking tools and staffing matrices to prioritize safe utilization of resources at Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines and Mercy Medical Center – West Lakes.
- Receives/gathers data, on an ongoing basis, from work unit (charge RN, management) to forecast/validate staffing needs.
- Adjusts staff coverage, following established procedures, in response to changes in patient census, patient acuity and/or over-staffing of work unit; maintains awareness of admissions, patient status upgrades/downgrades and changes in bed count needs/availability to identify impact on staffing needs and current schedule.
- Communicates with staff and department leadership regarding available staff, available shifts, and staffing shortages.
- Attends and completes all hospital and department-specific required education within the timeframe defined in the Mercy Medical Center Policies/Standards, including but not limited to updates to labor tracking tools.
- Identifies, resolves and communicates real potential staffing problems and information to appropriate leadership.
- Keeps immediate supervisor/s informed of issues/concerns and progress regarding current projects.
- Assists with CS Department data collection and maintenance of necessary records.
- Allocates internal and external resource staff to requesting departments.
- Coordinates with unit leadership, using labor tracking tools, to ensure employees are on the correct schedule.
- Communicates with staff when schedule changes occur.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient, staff and institutional information.
- May assist with nursing duties in areas of competency when staffing is not the current priority.
- Serves as subject matter expert on current labor tracking tools.

Job Summary
This position is responsible for the development and delivery of nursing and clinical education in a patient care area from basic to advanced practice levels. Plans, conducts and evaluates unit-specific new orientation, education and training in the assigned department. Works collaboratively with unit management and Regional Education to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care by providing educational support to staff.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provides education, training, and consultative services to clinical staff in assigned area. Assesses, develops, revises and coordinates teaching programs for all nursing staff. Provides in-service education. Ensures educational programs provide staff with skills and competency needed to meet all applicable regulatory, risk and patient safety requirements.
- Plans and directs the orientation and residency programs of new personnel to assigned unit. Facilitates staff development by promoting learning experiences and information for staff based on identified needs of the individuals. Responsible for development of competency assessment tools ensuring these assessments are completed and conducts education as necessary in follow-up.
- Contributes to the department’s quality improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to support these initiatives and incorporates the changes into education offerings.
- Collaborates with other Educators to enhance self-learning, promote professionalism among educators, reduce duplicative services, and to provide opportunities for a more standardized system.
- Participates in related clinical instruction and conferences and maintains and improves knowledge and competency in their specialty area.

- Active participant of calculating and monitoring Hours Per Patient Days along with acuity of patients, in relationship to staffing units accurately, safely, and cost effective under the direction of the unit manager.
