Job Summary Performs moderately complex to highly complex and specialized clinical laboratory tests/analyses using manual or automated techniques to obtain data for use in the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease/injury. Specific areas of accountability may include one, or a combination of, the following disciplines: transfusion service, microbiology, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, and urinalysis. An MLT is expected to seek advice from a Tech-in-Charge or an MT when the ability to resolve a problem is limited by training or experience. Work requires knowledge of the major disciplines of laboratory practice (e.g. blood bank, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, immunology, urinalysis, and microbiology). An incumbent applies knowledge of scientific principles and theory to determine the causes or possible significance of abnormalities and departures from the norm when test results do not conform to expectations. Your day-to-day work will include: - Pretesting and processing samples (Pre-Analytic) - Performing, analyzing, interpreting, and confirming tests (Analytic) - Documenting and delivering test results (Post-Analytic) - Operating and maintaining standard lab instruments and equipment - Accountability for ensuring the accuracy of test results and related analyses based on strict adherence to established standards, procedures and regulatory requirements for test analysis, quality control, quality assurance, safety, blood-borne pathogen/infection control, specimen handling and processing and documenting and reporting patient results. - Exercising independent judgment to monitor, control and assess test conditions, specimen quality, chemical and biologic reactions, and instrument function; identify atypical organisms; solve unexpected problems; correlate quantitative, biochemical, physiologic and morphologic data to verify results; and evaluate or implement new procedures. - In the absence of Lab Manager, you may also be assigned responsibility for serving as a Medical Technologist Lead

Essential Key Job Responsibilities - Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including, as applicable, patient identification and preparation; and specimen collection, handling, processing and testing - Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results, including, as applicable, reporting critical results - Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records - Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks - Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples - Evaluation of problem-solving skills - Performs quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of test results. - Analyzes patient samples according to approved standards of testing. - Maintains equipment to ensure accurate, consistent results in the performance of tests. - Provides teaching and education to clinical laboratory scientist students and other laboratory personnel. - Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects and processes laboratory specimens. - Follow standards of safety dictated by the laboratory, the hospital and regulatory agencies. - Contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory. - Participates in continuing education programs for the upgrade of educational experience. - Other job duties as assigned by management.
