Under the direction of the Administrative Laboratory Director and the POC/MHOP Coordinator or the Laboratory Accessioning Coordinator, the Clinical Support Technician assists in specimen collection, monitoring of laboratory specimens, clerical duties, receptionist duties, process specimens going to reference laboratories, generates computer reports, order entry of outpatient tests, liaison to customers using Memorial Hospital Laboratory, participates in inventory control and performs laboratory tests that are wavered by the State of Tennessee.   1. Follows established departmental policies/procedures pertaining to specimen collection, positively identifies patients, accurately labels specimens while with the patient, and delivers back to the Laboratory. 2. Greets patients courteously and explains the procedure to be performed; consistently obtains blood specimens properly, rarely misses a vein, routine venipuncture is performed within five minutes of entering the patient’s room. 3. Maintains confidentiality of patient, department, and hospital related information according to established policies. 4. Complies with all hospital personnel policies and procedures, participates in all required departmental and hospital education inservices within the required time frame, assumes responsibility for reading posted information. 5. Assures the correct specimen and quantity of specimen is submitted for analysis. 6. Participates in an approved competency program that demonstrates knowledge and skill and includes specimen collection, specimen processing, and care of patients of all ages. 7. Answers the phone by the third ring in a professional manner indentifying yourself and processing the call appropriately, including taking and delivering messages promptly and accurately, and/or routing each call as necessary. 8. Process phone inquiries from nursing units, physicians offices, reference laboratories, outside hospital accounts, etc. with minimum technologist assistance. 9. Processes collection worksheets and outstanding specimen reports to identify unreceived, unidentified, or missing specimens beyond the expected turnaround times. 10. Processes requests to be cancelled in the hospital information system correctly by talking with the patient’s nurse and providing reasons for cancellation. 11. Identifies specimen/requisitions discrepancies and resolves issues by calling for specimen or requesting information as needed. 12. Continually makes best use of time during their shift by assuming responsibility for communicating pertinent information with co-workers; completion of shift, and coordinating lunch/breaks and daily tasks in a manner which meets the needs of the laboratory. 13. Demonstrates responsibility and flexibility in maintaining work schedules consistent with the needs of the laboratory. 14. Assists in training new employees and students; willingly assist those with insufficient knowledge or inability to complete assigned tasks or duties. 15. Process specimens received both internally and from an outside account, register requisitions with accurate patient information, order all tests and correct tests, unbag specimens documenting specimens, receiving and missing or wrong specimens received, label specimen with the correct bar code labels, deliver specimens to laboratory for testing in a timely manner. 16. Assists technical personnel in sample log-in, testing workflow, and specimen tracking, as appropriate for patient age including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults.     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Accepts specimens and requisitions from external and internal customers utilizing excellent customer service skills. - Identifies patients/specimens using two unique patient identifiers and accurately labels specimen containers. - Correctly registers specimens and logs into Laboratory Information System (LIS) appropriate to department where testing is to be performed as needed, or evaluates specimen adequacy and acceptability and logs into LIS. - Performs specimen processing as needed. For example, proper identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, preparing slides, special handling, and required documentation. - Follows established procedures and policies including infection control and bloodborne pathogens. - Handles chemicals according to established safety protocols. - Meets defined workload productivity standards. Supports and utilizes LEAN principles. - Works proficiently with laboratory information systems and personal computers. - Follows established procedures and policies to obtain optimal test turn-around-times. - Participates in teaching peers. - Handles incoming and outgoing telephone calls utilizing good customer service skills and knowledge of the laboratory. - Follows up on and documents out of range temperatures.       Additional Functions As Needed:    Phlebotomy - - Accurately and efficiently performs venipunctures, and finger sticks ensuring collection of proper specimens for testing and ensuring patient safety. - Prepares specimens for testing.      Reference Lab -Patient Service Centers - Accurately and efficiently performs venipunctures, heel sticks and finger sticks ensuring collection of proper specimens for testing and ensuring patient safety. - May drive to patient service centers to perform phlebotomy services as needed.      Reference Lab-Resolution/Send outs - Resolves problem specimens/orders for laboratory staff and clients - Mayo send outs batching and packaging - Completes add on requests - Scanning of requisitions - Atlas Queue management - Standing and Future order entry   WDM Lab - Performs limited testing under supervision of technical staff. - Performs instrument maintenance according to established protocols.   Microbiology - Performs limited testing under supervision of technical staff. - Performs instrument maintenance according to established protocols      Histology – - Assists in gross room. - Prepares area and assists pathologists for frozen section testing. - Distribution/filing of slides and blocks.

Job Summary: Serves as a primary support resource to the technical staff (in assigned section) at CHI Franciscan Health System (CHI-FH) laboratories in accordance with established procedures and regulatory accreditation agency requirements. Work involves a variety of support activities, including monitoring supply levels, conducting inventory counts, providing customer service/communications support, making daily rounds to ensure environmental safety and infection control standards are maintained, and placing/tracking facilities and Biomed work orders. An incumbent uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for a variety of data entry and tracking activities, including log-in of test samples, finding missing samples, organizing and distributing work lists, and documenting testing details.   Work requires: 1) ability to communicate effectively, 2) exemplify customer service and 3) knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment, ordering and receiving, verifying specimens and specimen requirements, and skills in using a laboratory information system.   Essential Duties: - Provides communication support using established standards. Serves as a resource to customers to collect information requests or concerns; resolving or bringing issues forward as appropriate. - Utilizes laboratory information systems (LIS) for a variety of support activities which may include (but not limited to), registration, order entry, log in of test samples, test cancellations, modifications, add-ons, footnoting, tracking overdue testing, finding missing samples, follow up on inaccurate collections, and pulling pending logs to assure that testing deadlines are achieved; organizes and distributes testing work lists and sample testing details. - Performs supply and equipment support activities in accordance with all procedures and protocols to ensure products are available and testing is not delayed which may include, but not limited to, monitoring supply stock, ordering supplies and equipment, rotating stock according to expiration dates, sequestering stock to assure that appropriate lot numbers are being used, performing reagent verifications, daily stocking, annual inventory checks, investigating back order issues and communicating directly with vendor and/or purchasing staff. - Performs pre-analytical processing in area of responsibility. May include loading analyzers with samples for testing, prioritizing and balancing work load for work group. - Assures hospital infection prevention, facility safety standards and established protocols are maintained through daily rounding including monitoring, cleaning and maintaining lab equipment. Places and/or tracks needed work orders with BioMed, facilities and environmental services. Completes environmental surveillance auditing tool in area of responsibility on scheduled rotation. - Acts as a resource for area of assignment through orienting and training students or new or current employees. May assist in writing new procedures or processes; explains new and/or revised procedures, forms or other tools to staff; may demonstrate new systems, PC applications, equipment or supplies. - Performs department specific tasks as assigned which may include, but not limited to, bone marrow assist, microbiology set ups, issue blood products, troubleshoot issues and identify work flow or training opportunities, safety or other regulatory issues within scope of authority. - Participates in performance improvement activities; makes recommendations for process improvements related to work flow by suggesting alternatives or determining root causes for delays. Engages other work groups and/or higher authority to make changes to optimize the flow of patient samples in the area of responsibility.
