Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Assistant Director, the Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory testing and carries out the duties necessary to the performance of clinical test procedures, in the areas of hematology, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, and microbiology.
Essential Duties:
- Performs tests in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunohematology, immunology, and urinalysis.
- Effectively and efficiently uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Participates in the performance and evaluation of quality control in all clinical areas with appropriate action taken and documented.
- Demonstrates responsibility for instrument operation and preventative maintenance by performing and documenting on schedule.
- Troubleshoots equipment problems and takes action to resolve and document them.
- Demonstrates responsibility for the collection and preparation of specimens for clinical testing.
- When necessary, prepares specimens for referral to outside reference laboratories.
- When necessary effectively obtains blood samples from adults, newborns, children, geriatric patients, and other patients with special needs.

Performs computer test order entry as needed, according to laboratory policy, to include all patient information, tests, date/time of collection, priority, and appropriate sample information 5. Establish and maintain cooperative relationship with patients, staff, and physicians 6. Performs daily/weekly scheduled maintenance to maintain area in clean and orderly condition; observes safety regulations and policies; Participates in all required safety in-services; reviews departmental policies annually or as needed 7. Assigned to outpatient care area to assist nursing services with test order entry to expedite specimen collection and transport, to resolve uncollected labs through open communication with nursing and to maintain communication 8. Proper collection, processing and handling of routine send-out specimens for reference laboratories according to specific laboratory requirements and Standard Operating Procedure 9. Displays high level of phlebotomy skill. Assists with patient orders, reports, and other documents, as needed. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned.
