Performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various body fluids in order to expedite the physician’s diagnosis and treatment of his patient. Records and documents this data in the proper areas. The employee shall assist with quality audits in accordance with accrediting agencies. Technical duties will include routine patient testing, complex red cell antibody identification, and preparation of blood components for transfusion. Technical competency and critical thinking are required, as errors could result in serious consequences to patients. Work involves confidential patient diagnosis and test results, requiring the employee to respect the patient’s right to confidentiality. The technologist shall have good communication skills and interact pleasantly and professionally with all co-workers, medical staff, patients, visitors and others. The employee shall actively support the policies of the Laboratory and organization. Essential Key Job Responsibilities - Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including, as applicable, patient identification and preparation; and specimen collection, handling, processing and testing - Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results, including, as applicable, reporting critical results - Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records - Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks - Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples - Evaluation of problem-solving skills - Performs quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of test results. - Analyzes patient samples according to approved standards of testing. - Maintains equipment to ensure accurate, consistent results in the performance of tests. - Provides teaching and education to clinical laboratory scientist students and other laboratory personnel. - Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects and processes laboratory specimens. - Follow standards of safety dictated by the laboratory, the hospital and regulatory agencies. - Contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory. - Participates in continuing education programs for the upgrade of educational experience. - Other job duties as assigned by management.

Technologists must be aware of current laboratory policies and procedures, sign off on new procedures, complete competency testing annually as provided by the Laboratory Manager, and perform proficiency testing. - Performs work accurately with a minimum of non-clerical and clerical errors such as misidentifications, incomplete reports or incorrect reports. - Ensures that the date, time, and technician's initials are recorded or captured on all work performed including patient reports and logs. - Completes work and appropriate follow-ups according to protocol. - Understands job description and is able to competently perform testing in all laboratory areas. - Ensures that report comments are easily understood, neat and legible so that others will not misinterpret them. - Leaves work area neat and clean - Utilizes work time efficiently and completes tests within a reasonable amount of time, even when workload is heavy. - Uses spare time for work related activities. - Handles heavy workload effectively and professionally. - Performs procedures according to the laboratory's current written protocol. - Shows good judgment in handling situations not covered by written protocol. - Aids and assists with the clerical and secretarial duties.     Essential Key Job Responsibilities - Performs phlebotomy procedures, including venipunctures, capillary and therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. Advises and properly collects other body fluids for laboratory testing. - Performs testing on blood and body fluids and questions unexpected or abnormal results and follows up with appropriate verification and reports critical values appropriately. - Maintains current knowledge of equipment used in the laboratory. Performs maintenance and troubleshooting procedures when necessary and analyzes quality control materials on a routine schedule. - Replenishes supplies and notifies supervisor or responsible technologist if supplies need to be ordered. - Replaces reagents when needed. - Performs proficiency testing when assigned by the supervisor. - Works shifts other than normal established shifts when necessary to cover laboratory hours of operation. - Aids and assists with the clerical and secretarial duties. - Aids in the training of new employees.
