                                   To maintain status as an ECLS Specialist, the specialist must satisfy the following annual requirements:                   - Obtain (96) hours of clinical ECLS pump management experience - Satisfactorily participate in quarterly simulation labs verified by the ECMO Coordinator - Attend 8 out of 12 ECMO Specialist Meetings or physician debriefings (requirement will be adjusted by the ECMO Coordinator if meetings are cancelled throughout the year) - Attend mandatory individual simulation sessions with the ECMO Coordinator if 24 ECLS pump management hours are not obtained every 3 month period - Pass an annual comprehensive written test with a minimum score of (80%) - Pass an annual comprehensive simulation test with a minimum score of (80%)   - An ECLS Specialist who fails to meet the annual requirements outlined above, OR has been on leave for 6 consecutive months, must device an action plan with the ECMO Coordinator to include any of the following… -   - Obtain ECLS pump management hour deficit within the first 3 month period of the next calendar year. Hours will only serve to complete the prior year’s requirement. They cannot be used to also satisfy the following year’s requirement. - Satisfactorily complete (12-24) hours of supervised ECLS pump management with a veteran specialist, Perfusionist, or ECMO Coordinator - Participate in an individual pump overview and simulation session with the ECMO Coordinator - Re-take the annual comprehensive written test until a minimum score of (80%) is obtained - Attend a specified ECMO debriefing session - Present a case for debriefing at an ECMO Specialist Meeting - Attend and satisfy all requirements of an ELSO based formal meeting or training course - Obtain a specified number of CEUs from an ECMO focused formal meeting verified by the ECMO Coordinator Once notified, the ECLS Specialist will have 90 days (contingent upon ECLS census) to complete the action plan. Failure to do so will result in the loss of ECLS Specialist status.

- Demonstrates clinical competency and technical knowledge in the delivery and management of Extracorporeal Life Support including initiation of ECLS, circuit management, anticoagulation management, delivery of ACLS medications and blood products as needed, and continuous monitoring of appropriate physiologic data. - Must be capable of priming circuits, changing circuits, adapting circuits as needed and transporting ECLS patients. - May be required to assist with data collection. - Must be capable of managing ECLS patients via a 1:1 or 1:2 Specialist to pump ratio - Must be willing to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory, etc.), and the surrounding community by way of education and outreach. - Will be required to take regular call. - May be asked to present at M&M (mortality and morbidity) conference and provide technical education to the ECLS team and others as requested. - Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient care. - Audits patient records to ensure accuracy of patient care documentation and associated billing. - Utilizes critical thinking to make independent decisions and assumes responsibility for understanding the condition of assigned patients. - Assesses needs of patients and families, provides appropriate education, and makes necessary referrals to provide continuity of care. - Continues professional development by involvement in professional activities that enhance ECLS practices by sharing knowledge through networking and research. - Utilizes a holistic approach (considering psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area. - Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care. - Consistently delivers high quality care while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills in accordance with established policies and procedures and standards of care. - Integrates and demonstrates CORE values and Expectations for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures of Mercy One Des Moines.
